ANOTHER FRIDAY THE 13TH

LOCAL NEWS

08/13/10

AH, HERE WE ARE AGAIN! IT’S ANOTHER FRIDAY THE 13TH, THE UNLUCKIEST OF ALL DAYS OF THE YEAR, AT LEAST ACCORDING TO SUPERSTITION. ACCORDING TO OUR MOSTLY RELIABLE SOURCE—WIKIPEDIA—THE FEAR OF FRIDAY THE 13TH STARTED BECAUSE BOTH FRIDAYS AND THE NUMBER 13 ARE CONSIDERED UNLUCKY, SO WHEN YOU PUT THE TWO TOGETHER YOU’RE JUST DOUBLING THE CHANCE FOR CRUEL FATE TO STRIKE. THE IDEA THE NUMBER THIRTEEN IS UNLUCKY IS ALMOST AS OLD AS MANKIND ITSELF. ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE, THE APOSTLE JUDAS WHO BETRAYED JESUS WAS THE 13TH GUEST TO THE LAST SUPPER. IN ANCIENT ROME, WITCHES WERE SAID TO GATHER IN GROUPS OF 12 WITH THE 13TH ATTENDANT AT THE GATHERING BELIEVED TO BE THE DEVIL. IN GREAT BRITAIN, BOTH FRIDAY AND 13 WERE CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. FRIDAY WAS THE CONVENTIONAL DAY FOR PUBLIC HANGINGS AND THE NUMBER OF STEPS LEADING TO THE UP TO THE NOOSE- THIRTEEN. HISTORICAL RECORDS INDICATE THE NUMBER 13’S BAD REPUTATION IS MOSTLY BECAUSE IT COMES AFTER 12. IN NUMEROLOGY, THE NUMBER 12 IS CONSIDERED A COMPLETE NUMBER. THERE ARE 12 MONTHS IN A YEAR, 12 SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC, 12 GODS IN THE GRECO-ROMAN PANTHEON, 12 TRIBES OF ISRAEL AND 12 APOSTLES OF CHRIST. SINCE IT EXCEEDS 12 BY 1, THIRTEEN IS JUST BEYOND COMPLETENESS. OF COURSE, THESE DAYS SUCH SILLY SUPERSTITIONS ARE BARELY EVEN REMEMBERED? RIGHT? WELL, IT IS TRUE THAT MORE THAN 80% OF ALL HIGH RISES WORLDWIDE LACK A 13TH FLOOR. AIRPLANES HAVE NO 13TH AISLE. HOSPITALS AND HOTELS REGULARLY HAVE NO ROOM NUMBER 13. MOST CITIES DO NOT HAVE A 13TH STREET OR 13TH AVENUE. THE ONLY UNSUCCESSFUL MISSION TO THE MOON WAS APOLLO 13. EVEN TODAY MANY BELIEVE IF YOU HAVE 13 LETTERS IN YOUR NAME YOU WILL HAVE THE DEVIL’S LUCK. JACK THE RIPPER, CHARLES MANSON, JEFFREY DAHMER, THEODORE BUNDY AND ALBERT DESALVO ALL HAVE 13 LETTERS IN THEIR NAMES. THEN, AGAIN SO DOES GEORGE CLOONEY.
