lisd and mercy hospital news story 06.18.10 kshn previously reported that liberty city council gave its approval to a liberty economic development corporation plan to demolish the old mercy HOSPITAL building on travis. that proposal calls for the lcdc to pay half of the DEMOLITION costs with liberty isd and liberty county each paying 25 percent of the expense. during tuesday night’s lisd board meeting, school trustees unanimously approved that plan. liberty superintendent cynthia lusignolo told school board members that the DEMOLITION and asbestos removal will cost $114,000. That means lcdc would pay $57,000 while the school district and county would chip in $28,500 each. the proposed deal also gives lcdc the first right to purchase the property or a clear title to sell it. once the property is sold, the three entities would divide the proceeds based on that same formula. these three taxing entities have owned the property since a 2009 tax FORECLOSURE. although historic, this facility is considered by many to be both UNSAFE and unsightly. as a result, the three governmental bodies have been in discussions to demolish the building. liberty city council approved this cost-sharing plan last tuesday. now, lisd trustees have agreed to pay their share. if liberty county commissioners give their go-ahead, demolition of the old mercy hospital can begin. a special asbestos abatement permit from the state is for a limited period so all three entities are on a deadline with that and the $114,000 removal bid. all district softball news story 06.18.10 seven lady PANTHERS have been named to the 22-3a all-district softball team. the liberty girls were joined by two cleveland girls from the lady indians along with two tarkington lady longhorns. two lady panthers earned first team all-district honors. they are sophomore pitcher taylor kaderli and junior catcher amanda leonard. liberty girls named to the SECOND team all-district squad are SOPHOMORE hurler KATHERINE mcadams and junior outfielder haili beam. also pegged for the second team are cleveland pitcher shelby glenn and her teammate, utility player alyssa holly. two infielders for tarkington were named second team all district. they are lauren whitmire at third base and destiny kennedy – the longhorn shortstop. earning honorable mention were lady panthers kirby taylor, shelby vandeventer, and allison meche. once more, seven liberty lady panthers, two lady indians and two from tarkington have been named to the 22-3A all-district softball team. of note, of the liberty girls earning praises from the district’s coaches, three were three juniors, three sophomores and one freshman, which sould bode well for the future of the program.
