5.7.10

A JOINT WORKSHOP BETWEEN THE CITY OF LIBERTY, LIBERTY SCHOOL DISTRICT AND LIBERTY COUNTY COMMISSIONERS LAST NIGHT SAW ALL THREE ELECTED BODIES IN APPARENT AGREEMENT ON HOW TO DEAL WITH THE LONG RUNNING PROBLEM OF THE OLD MERCY HOSPITAL IN DOWNTOWN LIBERTY. THAT BUILDING IS NOW OWNED BY ALL THREE OF THOSE BODIES AND WHILE NO OFFICIAL CONCLUSIONS WERE REACHED THURSDAY THEY DID LEARN FROM LIBERTY CITY MANAGER GARY BROZ THAT BIDDING DEMOLITION COMPANIES RESULTED IN A LOWER BID THAN EXPECTED. LOW QUALIFIED BIDDER OFFERED TO DROP THE FOUR STORY STRUCTURE AND REMOVE. IT FOR $113,00O INCLUDING THE NECESSARY CONSULTANT TO INSURE THE JOB IS ACCORDING TO LAW. . INITIALLY A GUESS OF A $500,000 DROPPED WHEN BORZ SECURED AN OFFICIAL TCEQ LETTER DECLARING THE BUILDING UNSAFE AND WITH IT CAME PERMISSION TO FOREGO CERTAIN ASBESTOS ABATEMENT PROCEDURES. WITH THAT BIDS DROPPED SIGNIFICANTLY. THAT LOW BID FROM A A R INCORPORATED OF HOUSTON IS GOOD FOR 90 DAYS AND THE CITY, COUNTY AND SCHOOLS WILL NOW SPELL OUT THE PAPERWORK AS ROUGHLY AGREED TO LAST NIGHT. IF THAT ALL WORKS OUT IT IS REASONABLE TO PRESUME THE BUILDING DATING BACK TO THE 1930’S THAT HAS BEEN SUCH A SAFETY THREAT FOR BETTER THAN A DECADE MAY BE GONE FROM THE LIBERTY SKYLINE.
