news story

07.12.10

three men have bonded out of the hardin county jail following a confrontation last wednesday morning in saratoga that left a liberty county man dead. according to the silsbee bee newspaper, a man kicked in the front door of a saratoga home while brandishing a handgun, but standing on the other side of that door a man was wielding a sawed-off-shotgun. moments later, 26-year-old george howell of rye lay dead in front of that house in western hardin county. various beaumont area news outlets report hardin county sheriff ed cain said the confrontation began as a family argument taking place between 26-year-old wesley langham and his common-law step-FATHER, 50-year-old james dude ryan. allegedly, the younger man – langham - sent text messages warning ryan that he was coming to settle a score. however, he didn’t come alone. in tow were two rye residents – 50-year-old martin daniel green and the man killed in the incident, george howell. according to various reports, one of those three men shot out a security light before george howell, with a 40-caliber pistol in hand, banged on the home’s door. from the other side of that entrance, james ryan fired a sawed-off shotgun, killing howell. both wesley langham and martin green left the saratoga scene but were arrested later by hardin county sheriff’s deputies. according to records from the hardin county jail, both wesley langham and martin green of rye are now charged with burglary of a habitation with intent to carry out another felony. they were arraigned by justice of the peace t.j. hall who set bond at $25,000 each. wesely langham and martin green bonded out of jail thursday. james ryan was charged with theft of a firearm and possession of a prohibited weapon – a saw-off shotgun. he was released from the hardin county jail thursday after posting $7,500 bond. the matter of the shooting death of george howell of rye will now go before a hardin county grand jury to determine any other charges.

news story

07.12.10

this could be considered a positive economic sign for Liberty County. after months of large decreases in retail sales tax collections, payments made to cities in july were only down a collective $1,089 – that is a decline of less than ¼ of 1 percent. considering sales tax dollars to cities in liberty county are down 17.7 percent or $794,917 year-to-date, this month’s much smaller drop is encouraging news. statewide, sales tax RECIPIENTS are up for the THIRD month in a row following 14 months of decline. however, when compared to historical data, this month’s STATEWIDE allocations are still below those from July 2008. taking a look locally, sales tax collections are mixed, with some cities up for the month while others continue to be down. sales taxes collected by retailers in may are sent to the state in june and arrive at cities and counties in july. so these numbers reflect retail sales figures from two months ago. these revenues are then used by the GOVERNMENTAL entities in their budgets. taking a look at this month’s payments from the state to INDIVIDUAL cities, liberty was up by about 1 percent. that comes on the heels of an 8.76 percent decrease in june and a decline of 46.5 percent in may. also experiencing increases in sales tax payments this month were ames, daisetta, hardin and plum grove. on the other hand, sales tax allocations were down 9.17 PERCENT IN dayton and were off 5.59 percent for cleveland. also down is the city of north cleveland – they are off a whopping 45.95 percent. again, these numbers are for july sales tax allocations, which were collected by the state in june for may sales. turning our attention SOUTH to chambers county, mont belvieu saw a decrease of 24.79 percent while anahuac is down a staggering 55.84 percent. for the first seven months of 2010, cities in chambers county are down a combined 14.43 percent. repeating, it is the third straight month of increased sales tax allocations STATEWIDE. locally, while sales tax collections were down overall in liberty county, the drop of less than ¼ of one percent is a significant IMPROVEMENT from recent months.
