HUNGER BUSTER 2010 LOCAL NEWS 05/14/2010 ORGANIZERS ARE MAKING PREPARATIONS TO RESUME THE ENORMOUSLY POPULAR HUNGER BUSTER SUMMER MEAL PROGRAM FOR IT’S SECOND YEAR THIS SUMMER. LIBERTY COUNTY EXTENSION AGENT ALEXIS CORDOVA SAID RIGHT NOW VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED TO HELP WITH THE PROGRAM. LAST SUMMER, HUNGER BUSTER PROVIDED FREE MEALS DAILY TO KIDS IN THE LIBERTY AREA AT 10 SEPARATE LOCATIONS, THANKS TO THE COMBINED EFFORTS OF VOLUNTEERS, THE LIBERTY SCHOOL DISTRICT AND AREA CHURCHES. ACCORDING TO MRS. CORDOVA, THE PROGRAM PROVIDES NUTRITION EDUCATION ALONG WITH THE FREE MEALS TO KIDS AGES 1 TO 18. THIS YEAR’S HUNGER BUSTER PROGRAM BEGINS JUNE 7TH AND CONTINUES MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NOON TO 1 P.M. ON THROUGH TILL IT ENDS AUGUST 13TH. AUDIO. OVER THE COURSE OF 47 DAYS LAST SUMMER, THE HUNGER BUSTER PROGRAM SERVED MORE THAN 23,000 MEALS TO KIDS WHO OTHERWISE MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD THEM WHILE SCHOOL WAS OUT. weekend update news story 05.17.10 kshn REPORTED over the weekend that a tennessee teenager was arrested for the murder of a former dayton resident – 34-year-old ron CHRISTOPHER poullard (puh-lard). he was killed last monday night in his nashville, tennessee apartment. then, late thursday night, nashville police arrested 18-year-old montavis woodward of TENNESSEE – charging him with murder. nashville DETECTIVES continue to search for at least one additional suspect. a press release says the teenager confessed to participating in a BURGLARY of poullard’s apartment in SEARCH of illegal drugs. the former dayton resident returned home in the middle of that burglary and exchanged gunfire with what nashville police said was one of the suspects. poullard was hit in the abdomen and died at his apartment. kshn also reported saturday on plans for another summer of a very popular program in liberty. it’s known as hunger busters youth summer lunch program. this program will provide a free lunch to kids from 1 to 18 years old beginning june 7 and continuing through august 13. this community partnership INVOLVES liberty school district, area churches, and texas agrilife extension service. liberty extension agent alexis cordova said volunteers are still needed to help with the free lunch effort mondays through fridays from noon to 1 p.m. at locations throughout the liberty school district after school is out for the summer. for information on volunteering individually or as a group for the HUNGER buster youth summer lunch program, call alexis cordova at 936-336-4558, ext 221. also on saturday, we reported the latest fund-raising totals from the south liberty county relay for life. volunteer co-chair and treasurer sandra sterling said, to date, the local chapter has raised $79,500 with more donations still coming in but now at a slower pace. these locally raised dollars go to the national research effort to develop a cancer treatment. the money also provides local PATIENT care and information to cancer sufferers and their families. sandra sterling extends her gratitude to the many businesses and services clubs plus the hundreds of individuals who help this idea stay alive and growing in south liberty county. KSHN BEGAN REPORTING OVER THE WEEKEND ON A SHOOTING INCIDENT AT A WARDEN’S HOUSE AT THE PRISON COMPLEX ON C.R. 686 IN DAYTON. THAT COMPLEX INCLUDES THE PLANE STATE JAIL PLUS THE HENLEY AND HIGHTOWER PRISON UNITS. THREE MEN WERE ARRESTED AFTER A POLICE CHASE THAT ENDED WITH A WRECK IN HARRIS COUNTY. TWO WEAPONS ALSO WERE SEIZED – ONE DESCRIBED AS A TOMMY-GUN STYLE RIFLE WITH A STRAIGHT CLIP AND THE OTHER AS A COLT REVOLVER. DAYTON POLICE SERGEANT DOUG O’QUINN SAID IT ALL BEGAN AT THE STATE-PROVIDED HOME OF WARDEN WILHELMINA HOWARD ON CR 686. "AUDIO" SGT. O’QUINN SAID TWO BROTHERS – 19-YEAR-OLD HENRY HERNANDEZ AND 24-YEAR-OLD NELSON HERNANDEZ – WERE ARRESTED AND TAKEN TO THE HARRIS COUNTY JAIL. ANOTHER MAN, LARRY GALLOWAY, IS BEING HELD HERE IN LIBERTY COUNTY. "AUDIO" THE DAYTON INVESTIGATOR SAID FELONY WARRANT HOLDS ALSO HAVE BEEN PLACED ON THE HERNANDEZ BROTHERS, JUST IN CASE THEY MAKE BAIL ON THOSE HARRIS COUNTY CHARGES. "AUDIO" ACCORDING TO DAYTON SGT. DOUG O’QUINN, ALL THREE OF THE MEN ALLEGED TO BE INVOLVED IN THIS SHOOTING LIVE IN HARRIS COUNTY, ALTHOUGH THE HERNANDEZ BROTHERS HAVE DAYTON TIES. "AUDIO" WE ARE TOLD WARDEN HOWARD WAS NOT HOME AT THE TIME OF THE FRIDAY EVENING SHOOTING; HOWEVER HER TWO ADULT SONS WERE THERE. "AUDIO" ACCORDING TO THE DAYTON POLICE SERGEANT, ALL THREE SUSPECTS HAVE PRIOR ARREST RECORDS. "AUDIO" SGT. O’QUNN SAID THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN DEADLY, AND HE COMPLIMENTED THE QUICK WORK OF LAW ENFORCEMENT. "AUDIO" SO, FOLLOWING A SHOOTING INCIDENT AT THE HOME OF WARDEN WILHELMINA HOWARD AT THE PRISON COMPLEX IN DAYTON, THREE MEN ARE NOW IN CUSTODY. HENRY HERNANDEZ IS CHARGED WITH FELONY EVADING ARREST WHILE HIS BROTHER, NELSON HERNANDEZ, IS CHARGED WITH FELONY IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARM. BOTH ARE BEING HELD IN THE HARRIS COUNTY JAIL. A THIRD SUSPECT, LARRY GALLOWAY, IS CHARGED WITH DEADLY CONDUCT AND REMAINS IN LIBERTY COUNTY JAIL IN LIEU OF A $150,000 BOND. lee groce news story 05.17.10 kshn reported over the weekend that liberty county commissioner pct. 2 lee groce was taken to hermann memorial HOSPITAL northwest in humble friday after passing out. on sunday, his wife, linda groce, said doctors have now run extensive tests on his heart. those tests have ruled out a heart attack or blockage of the ARTERIES. doctors are now telling the veteran county commissioner that he may have a chemical or ELECTRICAL imbalance that is causing problems with his heart. they plan to conduct a chemical stress test today and, based on those results, possibly schedule an electrical stress test. repeating, commissioner lee groce was hospitalized friday after passing out. doctors have ruled out a heart attack and blockage but are still trying to determine what is causing problems around his heart. he remains hospitalized for that purpose. it is our understanding that he is felling much better. lee groce has served as a liberty county commissioners for 24 years.
