Barbers Hill: The Barbers Hill Lady Eagles basketball team faces the Mansfield Summit Lady Jaguars tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Class 4-A state semi-final match-up. Community Education: The Liberty Police Department is having another in their series of community education classes.  It’s coming up on Thursday March 8th from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. This class, on ‘sexting’ will be held at the Liberty Police Department behind the fire station on Lakeland Drive in Liberty. Instructors will go over different acronyms kids are using and the different gadgets they use to text without a phone. Rural Development: US Department of Agriculture will hold a rural development office day this Thursday to present program information and applications to those from Liberty and Chambers Counties. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Farm Service Agency Office on the Veteran’s Memorial Highway, that’s the bypass, in Liberty. The information will be on a variety of USDA Rural Development programs.

Dayton TAKS: Current and former Dayton High or Dayton Night School students needing to pass TAKS to get their diploma may re-take tests they need March 5 through March 8. Monday March 5 social studies testing will be offered. Tuesday March 6th – sciences tests. Cleveland: Recent incidents of on-campus drug use at Cleveland High School and Cleveland Middle School has resulted in the arrest of six adults and an unnamed number of juveniles on drug possession and delivery charges. Cleveland ISD Public Relations Director Stacey Gatlin said approximately 28 separate charges were filed on several Cleveland Highs School students last Thursday. Six adult suspects, all current or former students were arrested. They are 20 year old Barry McDuffie, Quanterious Howard, age 17 and Ryan McKee also 17. Also arrested were Richard Flores, Steven Flores and Luis Valdez, all 18 years old.

Hajovsky Benefit: A benefit fundraiser for the family of the late Larry Hajovsky is tonight at the Liberty Fire Department. A life member of the Liberty volunteer fire department, Larry died Friday night at the age of 45, after suffering a second stroke. To help his widow, Carol and their three young children, a benefit barbecue and auction will be held at the Liberty Fire Department on Lakeland Drive this evening from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tickets are $10. Fire: Just before 7 p.m. Sunday, the Hardin Volunteer Fire Department was called to a family residence totally engulfed in flames. The home is in an area most commonly know as Tanner settlement, on CR 2065.  It was the Vernon Byrd home. No one was hurt but it was thought two family pets perished in the flames. Another animal, perhaps two, were saved by firefighters.

Summer Jobs: Are you a high school students looking for a summer job? The Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge is accepting employment applications from young men and women ages 15-18 for two summer positions available through the Youth Conservation Corps program. Refuge Manager Stuart Marcus said crew members will be paid $7.25 an hour for 40 hours of work each week starting June 11 and ending August 3. According to Stuart Marcus, work will conducted outside and will be physically demanding.

DISD Cuts: The Dayton ISD School Board met Thursday and took action to deal with the district’s already documented financial issues. Superintendent Mike Kuhrt said making necessary financial cuts meant eliminating some programs within the district. As a result, he said several staff members would be in different positions next year or will no longer have a job in Dayton schools. Mr. Kuhrt said that includes replacing fully certified librarians at each of Dayton’s school campuses with paraprofessionals under the direction of one districtwide librarian. DISD trustees also voted to eliminate districtwide support service positions for federal programs, student testing and at-risk counseling. Those duties will be reassigned. Nine jobs will be affected at DISD.

Porchia Plea: Another of those charged in the Cleveland child rape case has been sentenced, but for a different sexual assault. Marcus Anthony Porchia was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison after entering a guilty plea to sexual assault of a child in Judge Mark Morefield’s 75th District Courtroom. Marcus Porchia’s victim, in that case, was 14 years old when she gave birth to a child fathered by the defendant. Porchia has withdrawn his guilty plea on the sexual assault of the 11-year-old girl.

Pink Night: Area women are invited to Pink Fight Night tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Liberty Center in Liberty City Hall. Texas Agrilife Extension Agent Alexis Cordova said it’s a fun, educational event designed to fight back against both breast and cervical cancer. There will be a presentation from a doctor and cancer survivors plus small group discussions. There also will be free breast exams. For information, call 936-334-3230.

Lady Eagles: The Barbers Hill Lady Eagles basketball team is one of four Class 4-A squads headed to the state tournament this Thursday through Saturday in Austin. That tourney features Barbers Hill against Summit plus Rockwall versus Victoria East. Both of those games will be played back-to-back Thursday starting at 7 p.m. Then, the winners advance to the Class 4-A state championship game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. KSHN will broadcast the Barbers Hill games live.

War Memorial Fund: More than the $20,000 goal has been raised for improvements to the War Memorial on Grand Avenue in Liberty. LISD Superintendent Dr. Cynthia Lusignolo said a $7,500 anonymous gift has pushed the fund-raising drive past the original goal to a new total of $22,130. Organizers hope work will start very soon with a goal of having the job complete and ready for a rededication ceremony on Memorial Day.

Hull-Daisetta Athletics: Joe Allen Slack has been removed from his position as Hull-Daisetta athletic director and head football coach. He is a native of Daisetta and graduate of Hull-Daisetta High School. Joe Slack was reassigned to teach at the elementary school. The action by the school board is effective immediately, and the district’s superintendent said they hope to have the position of head football coach filled by March 27.

Dayton Man pleads: A Dayton man, 46-year-old Bert Carroll Rainey, pled guilty in federal court this week to fraudulently receiving worker’s compensation benefits following a work-related accident at his job as transportation agency security supervisor at Hobby Airport. Rainey could face up to one year in federal prison. A sentencing date has not been set.

Home & Garden Show: The Dayton Chamber of Commerce is hosting the first Liberty County Home and Garden Show this weekend at the Dayton Community Center. The two-day event is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. There will be a wide variety of exhibitors plus seminars on virtually every aspect of home landscaping and gardening. More Candidate Filings: Liberty school trustee Matt Harris has withdrawn from the regular LISD board election on May 12 and, instead, filed to run in the special election to fill the two years remaining on the retiring Bobby Pope’s school board seat. Candidates can sign up in either the regular election or the special election, but not both. Also, Liberty City Council member Louie Potetz has filed to run for a new council term. Candidate filing runs through March 5.

Sheriff’s News: The Liberty County Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s help in locating two male theft suspects driving an older model black and tan Ford Explorer. Sheriff’s Captain Rex Evans said those men fled after a Liberty County homeowner on Highway 321 fired a shotgun toward the suspects and their vehicle during a nighttime theft early yesterday morning.  The homeowner reportedly shot out that vehicle’s back and side windows during an attempt to protect his property. Anyone with information on those two male suspects or the vehicle s asked to call the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office at (936) 336-4500. Callers can remain anonymous.

LISD Board:  Liberty Independent School District Trustees have called a special election for May 12 to fill the unexpired term of Bobby Pope. Four people have already signed up to run for the regular election. However, to run in the special election, a person must sign up to run specifically for the special election. Those interested in running for a spot on the LISD Board of Trustees can file to run in either the regular election, or the special election, but not both.

Liberty City Council: Tuesday night, Liberty City Council approved the appointment of former City of Beaumont Official Tom Warner as the city engineer and public works director here. Warner, who lives in Hardin, is the husband of Precinct 2 Commissioner Charlotte Warner. He worked for the City of Beaumont for 32 years, first with the city’s traffic and transportation department, and then as director of public works.

Dayton City Council: Dayton City Council Tuesday night approved a joint agreement with the Dayton School District and Liberty County for the county to take over holding the city and school elections on May 12.  Election balloting for the Dayton City Council and Dayton School Board would be at the Dayton Community Center. Under the agreement, the Liberty County Clerk’s Office will be responsible for overseeing the election and counting the votes.

BioFuels Project: The early evaluation stage is under way for a project that could be an economic boom for this area. British Petroleum is working with farmers in Liberty, Jefferson and Chambers Counties to grow a specialized, high-fiber, seed-cane agriculture crop that can be converted to a biofuel. In addition to leasing up to 50,000 acres of farm land in that three-county region, BP officials are looking for an approximately 350 acre site to locate a processing plant. That project could bring as much as $1 billion in investment to our area along with a 1,000 temporary construction jobs and more than 250 permanent jobs.

Candidates for LISD Board: There are now four candidates for three at-large positions on the Liberty School Board subject to the May 12 election. Yesterday, Liberty hotel owner Susan E. McCain filed paperwork to be on the ballot. As reported, two incumbent trustees, Bruce Bell and Matt Harris, are seeking new terms. Ron Mayo has also officially filed for the Liberty School Board. Candidate filing continues through March 5th.

City Council Candidate: Longtime Liberty businessman Gary “Skeet” Raggio has made his city council candidacy official. He joins new candidate David Arnold and Incumbent Council Member Frank Jordan on the May election ballot. We reported incumbent Mike McCarty is not running for a new term, and Council Member Louie Potetz has not yet filed to run again, but has indicated he might. Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett is asking Liberty voters for another term, so far without opposition.

Brookshire Burglary: Four burglars were flushed from Liberty Brookshire Brothers Grocery store just before 2 yesterday morning, and that began a chase that ended in Harris County west of the US 90 & 2100 intersection. One of the foursome is in custody, captured by Liberty Police Officer Cedric McDuffie.  The other three fled into a wooded swampy area. The apprehended suspect is 35-year-old Ronald Wayne Harvey Jr. from Houston. The suspects took cigarettes and broke in the pharmacy but dropped what they had when officers arrived.

Rainfall: After a record low year for rainfall in 2011, rain totals in the City of Liberty have now been above average for three straight months. KSHN maintains the official records for the U.S. Weather Service here in South Liberty County. That official gauge recorded 6.13 inches of rain for December, 5.55 inches in January and another 8.01 inches so far during February. That’s a three-month total of 19.69 inches compared to the three-month average for those months of 13.85 inches.

T.E.A.: On Friday, an announcement was made by the Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott that he would waive a new state ordered S.T.A.A.R. grading requirement for one year. Dayton Superintendent Mike Kuhrt said the law marks this school year as the starting point for new end-of-course exams for high school students. He said this one year reprieve from the requirement is a positive for Texas kids, the Dayton ISD and every school district in Liberty County.

Basketball Playoffs: The Hardin girls and boys basketball teams are both in playoff action tonight and both squads are playing in the Lufkin Hudson High School gym. The Lady Hornets face Central Heights at 6 p.m. in a regional quarterfinal game. The Hardin boys play Crocket in a bi-district contest. That game tips off around 7:30, immediately following the girls.

Theft: Over the weekend, thieves struck the Weaver Motor Company of Kirbyville jacking up 21 trucks, removing the wheels and tires. Two months ago, Liberty Police on patrol surprised thieves at BJ Ford. In that earlier case, the men escaped but left the contraband, a rental truck and all their tools and gear.

CISD Teachers Investigated: Cleveland Middle School Teacher Dwayne Knecht has been placed on paid administrative leave while he is under investigation for alleged improper conduct while handling student disciplinary matters. No further details were available on that ongoing investigation. It was just last week when another Cleveland ISD teacher, Carlos Artieda, was charged with choking a Cleveland Elementary School student. Mr. Artieda is believed to be free on a $5,000 bond for Injury to a Child, a third-degree felony.

Education Grants: The Liberty Education Foundation Fund has awarded another $27,356 in grants to Liberty ISD Teachers who go the extra mile to teach their students. These dollars are awarded to Liberty educators with innovative teaching ideas that went unfunded with the school district’s budget. The six Liberty school teachers whose ideas have been awarded grants are Carlene Patton, Elisha Lemelle, Jill Cornell, Jennifer Hutchins, Isabel Morfin and Odella Hebert.

Dam Release: Based on the high volume of calls to the KSHN office when the Trinity River is on the rise, there’s a big interest among locals on the dam release at the Lake Livingston Dam. Of course, KSHN reports the latest dam release on an hourly basis on FM 99.9 - more often when the river is on the rise. We also include that data on the Radiogram each Monday through Friday. Playoff Basketball: Four area girls basketball teams are in state playoff action tonight at neutral sites. The Lady Broncos play Huntsville today at 6 p.m. in the Summer Creek High School gym in Humble. That site is hosting a double-header, so after that game, the Barbers Hill girls face Kingwood Park at 7:30.  The Liberty Lady Panthers will play the Sealy Lady Tigers today at 7 p.m. in the Pasadena Memorial High School gym. Then, the Hardin girls basketball team faces the Woodville Lady Eagles. Tip off is tonight at 6 in the Hardin-Jefferson High School gym.

Stand Off: Kevin Eugene Boney remains in the Liberty County Jail on $700,000 bond following a standoff with Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputies. Sheriffs Captain Rex Evans said the 34-year-old identified himself as a member of the Texas Militia and threatened to kill officers. It all began after Boney is alleged to have fired a weapon at his wife. Kevin Eugene Boney is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a family member and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.

Armed Robbery: Three suspects are in custody, charged with aggravated robbery after allegedly holding Dayton Business owner, Mike Humphrey at gun point. According to Dayton Police Sgt. Doug O’Quinn after 10 p.m. Monday night three men, wearing masks, entered the Humphrey’s Sandwich Shop on Sterling Street in Dayton. Sgt. O’Quinn said one of the suspects, 24 year old Brandon Cox is a former employee of the restaurant. The three robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled. One of the suspects was apprehended as he fled from the shopping center, still wearing the mask. Questioning the suspect led them to the other two, Seth Garrette age 18 and Brandon Jagger age 19.

Liberty City Council: The Liberty City Council met Tuesday night and took the next step in issuing certificates of obligation to finance $1.8 million in city improvements. As we reported some time ago, council plans to put most of that amount into the construction of a new Liberty Police Station. City Manager Gary Broz said now comes a forty-five day waiting period during which the city will seek approval of the plan from the Texas Attorney General’s Office as well as time to determine what the final interest rate on the certificates will be.

Closed for President’s Day: Monday is President’s Day and all federal, state and local government offices will be closed. Most banks and all post offices will also be closed for the holiday on Monday. However, Waste Management garbage service will run as scheduled in all three cities of Liberty County on Monday.

Commissioners: Liberty County Commissioners met yesterday morning and awarded the bid to replace the roof on the Liberty County Annex on Cos in Liberty to Will Cox Roofing of Cleveland for just over $22,000.  In other action, commissioners approved a pay raise for Liberty County Fire Marshal Jim Wilson. His annual salary will now go from $4500 to $6,000 per year.

Candidate Filing: Two more city council candidates made their re-election bids official.  As expected, Incumbent Dayton Council Woman Barbara Zaruba filed Tuesday for a full term. She was appointed to fill out the remainder of Felix Skarpa’s council term when he was elected Dayton mayor.  Also yesterday, Liberty City Council Member Frank Jordan filed the paperwork to ask for a new term.  He is the only person to file for Liberty City Council. Also, Incumbent Bruce Bell has filed to run for another term on the Liberty school board. The filing period continues through March 5th.

Missing Person: The search for a north Liberty County man, reported missing January 6, is continuing. Liberty County Sheriff’s Captain Rex Evans said the investigation into the disappearance of 62-year-old Edwin Clark Rogers is ongoing. Mr. Rogers was last seen around Dec. 30th.  With all available leads having been followed, Captain Evans said anyone with information is asked to call the Liberty County SO at 336-4500.

DISD Bus Accident: DPS reports two Dayton ISD students were taken to Liberty Dayton Regional Medical Center with minor injuries following a school bus accident Monday afternoon. In addition, the driver of the vehicle that struck the bus from behind was taken to a Houston hospital with a broken leg. DPS Trooper Boyd Lamb said Roland Cole of Livingston was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital with a broken leg after his vehicle struck the back of a Dayton ISD school bus Monday afternoon.

Public Meeting: Liberty County residents, business owners and officials are invited to a public meeting Thursday to share their input and ideas for the development of a regional plan for the 13-county area that makes up the Houston-Galveston Area Council. That public meeting is Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dayton Community Center. Residents will have an opportunity to give their feedback on what they think are the most pressing issues facing their communities and the region overall. Bridgehaven Auction Total: Thanks to the generosity of local businesses and professionals, who donated items to be sold and the hundreds of bidders who participated, the Bridgehaven Radio Auction, held this past Thursday evening and Saturday morning on KSHN, raised more than $10,000 to help fund the organization’s daily operations. Bridgehaven services abused children in both Liberty and Chambers Counties. They are funded mostly by grants and from county and state budgets but also must raise some of their operational budget through fund raisers and this was one of those efforts.

Candidate Filing: There are two seats up for election in at large voting in the Devers ISD on May 12th. The incumbents are Robert Kirkland and Tommy McIntosh. Mr. McIntosh has already filed for a new term. Mr. Kirkland has not and no one else has signed to run for a spot on the Devers School Board. To date, no candidates have filed in the Ames City Council election. The filing period runs through March 5th.

Business Expansion: Global Tubing in Dayton is planning a $15 million expansion of its production capacity. The local manufacturer is adding a second mill in order to double its monthly output. That project is expected to be completed by July of this year. According to Global Tubing CEO Bob Bunch, the company is serving a growing worldwide market with demand for its product steadily increasing. He said the expansion will require hiring more people for the assembly line over the company’s 140 person workforce now in place.

Cleveland ISD: A Cleveland elementary school teacher has been placed on administrative leave following an accusation he choked a 5th grade student. According to information from Cleveland ISD, Carlos Artieda, a fourth grade teacher, got into an argument with a 5th grader. The argument is said to have escalated and Mr. Artieda allegedly choked the student. Both the Cleveland school administration and Cleveland ISD Police Department investigated the incident. Mr. Artieda has been charged with injury to a child.

Hospital District Board: There are two seats on the Liberty County Hospital District board up for election on the May 12th ballot. Board Member Marilyn Darbonne’s term is expiring.  She said she will run for a new term but has not yet filed. The second seat is the one left vacant when Charles Kammerling resigned about a year and a half ago. No one has been appointed to fill the vacancy, so now it will be subject to the May 12th Hospital District Election.

Dayton City Council: To date, no one has filed to run for Dayton City Council on May 12th and one longtime council man says he won’t be seeking a new term.  Bill Gay has been a member of the Dayton Council for eight years, but said yesterday he has decided not to run for a fifth term. Mr. Gay said his reasons are purely personal.

War Memorial Fund Raiser: With the money still being counted, yesterday’s BBQ fundraiser lunch brought in over $6,000 for the planned renovation to the countywide War Memorial in Liberty. That brings the total raised toward the $20,000 goal to just over $10,000.

Bank Robber: John Stark, 46, who’s last known address, was in Liberty County, was taken into custody yesterday by Beaumont Police. Sgt. Rob Flores, Public Information Officer with Beaumont Police Department said Stark was arrested at the Park Dale Mall in Beaumont yesterday around 11 a.m. and was positively identified as the person that robbed the Beaumont Prosperity Bank earlier yesterday morning. John Stark is also suspected in other bank robberies in both Beaumont and Houston. Sgt. Flores said he faces both state and federal bank robbery charges.

Candidates: Candidate filing is off to a slow start for the May 12th city and school board elections. There are three members of the Hardin City Council with expiring terms. No incumbent has filed, nor has anyone else filed to run for Hardin City Council yet. On the Hardin School Trustee Board, both incumbents up for re-election have filed paperwork seeking new terms.

Dayton City Council: The Dayton City Council met Monday night and awarded a bid for $39,300 to Elite Electrical Contractors of Liberty to replace all the electrical wiring at the Daniel Park Baseball Complex.  Dayton City Manager David Douglas said it was recently discovered that sometime late last year, thieves had stolen all of the copper electrical wiring.

Cleveland Rape Suspects: 13 of the 14 adult suspects charged in the Cleveland gang rape may soon go to trial, even as early as this month. Yesterday those 13 defendants appeared before 75th District Judge Mark Morefield for a docket call. Four were placed on the February 27 trial calendar. They are Rayford Ellis Jr., Kelvin King, Marcus Porchia, and Jamarcus Napper. Also in court yesterday, 8 of the 14 were placed on the March 19th trial docket. One of the suspects, Jared Cruse, who for at least the third time, showed up without an attorney, was told to return for a March 5th docket call at which time an attorney would be appointed. The 14th adult, Isaiah Rashad Ross recently pled guilty to aggravated sexual assault.

Police Chase: A Liberty man, Josh Albritton, 24 is in custody accused of car theft. It was mid morning yesterday when police were told a man had tried to steal a truck from a Kentucky Street address and fled the scene on foot. Liberty Officer Wes O’Hanlon apprehended the man after a chase on foot.  Officer O’Hanlon said Albritton was in possession of a knife and some illegal incense. The Liberty County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the search.

City and School: The filing period for local city council and school board positions began yesterday and continues through March 5th, with the local Election Day on May 12th. One candidate filed yesterday in Liberty for a new term, Liberty Mayor Carl Picket.

Jail Contract: The Liberty County Commissioners approved a 60 day extension on the contract for the Community Education Center, Inc. to continue to operate the Liberty County Jail. The contract was due to be renewed in October last year, and was extended in an emergency meeting back in December. Yesterday morning in a special called meeting, Liberty County Commissioners extended the contract for 60 more days.

Akins / Shauberger: Charged in 2009 for tampering with governmental records, F. Ray Akins and Eddie Shauberger are moving toward a trial date.  At a docket call in the 75th District Court Monday, Judge Mark Morefield scheduled Akins and Shauberger for the trial docket on March 19th. They may or may not go to trial on that date.

Trinity River: Heavy rains north of Lake Livingston prompted an increase in dam release levels to 37,200 cfs Saturday afternoon. According to Spencer Karr of the Trinity River Authority, the lake level seems to be flattening and heavier release is not expected. Sunday afternoon, the river gauge at the Hwy 90 bridge in Liberty showed the river at 24.95 feet above sea level. Flood stage is 26 feet. The Trinity River is expected the crest in Liberty Tuesday afternoon at about 27.8 feet.

Pope Resigns: Liberty ISD Board President Bobby Pope has submitted a letter or resignation from the school board after six years of service. Mr. Pope said he believes it’s in the best interest of his family to step down. The Liberty school board will consider possible action regarding Bobby Pope’s resignation during their next board meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 21. School district officials report that position must be filled by either a board appointment or special election. If a special election is called, it could be held in conjunction with the district’s election already set for May 12.

Cleveland Rape Suspects: The fourteen adults accused in the notorious Cleveland gang rape case are scheduled to appear before 75th District Judge Mark Morefield today. One of those fourteen – Isaiah Rashad Ross – has pled guilty to aggravated assault of a child and is scheduled for sentencing. The other 13 adult suspects are scheduled for a docket call today, and their cases could be set for trial. The fourteen are accused of aggravated sexual assault of a then 11-year-old girl.

Realignment: The U.I.L. announced football realignments for school districts across the state yesterday. Starting with Dayton’s District 19-4A, it includes the Broncos, Barbers Hill, Crosby and C.E. King from the past two years plus five newly added teams – New Caney and New Caney Porter, Humble, Kingwood Park and Summer Creek. Liberty’s District 22-3A is unchanged with the Panthers, Cleveland, Tarkington, Coldspring, Huffman-Hargrave, Shepherd and Splendora. Turning to District 10-2A, it’s an eight-team district with Hardin, Anahuac, Kountze, Newton, Warren, East Chambers, Woodville and newly added Kirbyville. Hull-Daisetta’s District 11-1A also changed and now includes the Bobcats, Colsmesneil, West Hardin and Iola.

Harrelson Appeals: Ousted Liberty County Treasurer Janet Harrelson has filed an appeal to District Judge Mark Morefield’s recent dismissal of her lawsuit against Liberty County. We reported the judge ruled the suit - claiming Ms. Harrelson had been unlawfully removed from office due to an investigation of official misconduct - had not been filed in a timely manner. Liberty County Attorney Wes Hinch said no details of the appeal are available, but court records indicate Janet Harrelson is representing herself in this action.

Charges Dropped: The Liberty County District Attorney’s Office has filed a motion to dismiss murder and injury to a child charges against Martina Sellers in the death of her daughter, two-year-old Brook Glynn Nugent. The child’s father, Gerald Nugent, was convicted of murder in that case last month and sentenced to a 60-year prison sentence. The D.A.’s motion said evidence presented at Nugent’s trial did not establish Ms. Sellers involvement in the child’s death. The motion asserts there is not sufficient evidence to obtain a conviction against her.

Liberty’s Ryan Melton is headed to Texas State University in San Marcos to play offensive tackle for the Bobcats. Dayton’s Gamal Fowler is going to Weber State University in Utah as a wide receiver.

Cleveland Update: Cleveland I.S.D. administrators have now confirmed that a total of 16 high school students were thought to be under the influence. Cleveland ISD Public Relations Director Stacy Gatlin said that substance has now been identified as a prescription anxiety medication called Lorazepan.  School officials say it appears four high school students were involved in distributing the pills. Cleveland police will charge them with possession or delivery of a controlled substance according to school officials.

School Dictionaries: The Liberty Rotary Club has expanded its free student dictionary program. Since 2002 the Liberty Rotarians have given a total of about 2,000 free dictionaries to every third grade student attending Liberty Elementary School. Now, Liberty Rotary Club Member and Past President Diane Huddleston said the program also provides free age-appropriate dictionaries to all seventh-graders at Liberty Middle School. On Tuesday Liberty Rotarians passed out 216 dictionaries to the seventh-graders.

Cleveland High School: Several ambulances were called for 15 students at Cleveland High School who were reported to have been under the influence of some substance during afternoon classes yesterday. Cleveland ISD Public Information Director Stacy Gatlin said school staff began noticing a number of students who seemed sick. She said 15 students at the high school appeared to be under the influence of some unknown substance. Eight students were taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center or Kingwood Hospital, while seven others examined by EMS personnel at the school were not hospitalized. Ms. Gatlin said there were no indications any of the students were any danger.

Hospital: Liberty Dayton Regional Hospital Board Member Paul Henry said the hospital’s financial condition is improving, and they recently signed an agreement to pay off debts owed by the hospital dating back to the previous ownership.  In addition, the board hopes to begin long term planning very soon. Already services at the local medical facility have increased as has patient usage. In 2011, 744 people admitted to the hospital with more than 8,800 people seen through the emergency room.

Cleveland Robbery: The Cleveland Police Department is asking for the public’s help locating two men who robbed Western Finance on North College Ave. last Wednesday evening around 5:30 p.m. Police say an employee reported a masked man ran inside the front door of the business and demanded money.  The employee said the robber jumped the front counter wielding a handgun and threatened to hurt her if she did not cooperate. After grabbing money, the armed robber ran to a waiting vehicle, described as either a maroon Ford Contour or Ford Taurus. The driver and the robber are both described as black males with tall, slender builds.
