news story

05.26.10

this is hurricane preparedness week - that mean’s local, state and federal officials are reminding folks its best to plan now to protect family and property. Hurricane season officially begins tuesday and continues through November 30. most experts agree this will be an active tropical storm season. with that in mind, here are some important tips from EMERGENCY officials. those who live in an . EVACUATION ZONE should learn the best route for their location and discuss evacuation plans with their family. When a storm is in the Gulf, monitor your favorite radio or television station for instructions from local officials. When making a family plan for any hazard, choose a place to meet outside of the potential disaster area. Give all family members the name and phone number of someone outside your city or state. if Anyone gets separated from the group that person should call that number to let others know where they are – and be sure to make these plans now, not when the need arises. here’s more safety tips – right now is the time to Put an emergency supply kit together. it should include a radio that also receives NOAA weather with extra batteries, flashlight with more batteries, extra eye glasses, bottled water, non-perishable food, plus dry clothes. the emergency supply kit also should have bedding, medications and copies of doctor’s prescriptions, as well as special products for babies, elderly and medically fragile family members. don’t forget cash, credit cards, photo IDs, important documents plus insurance records. when making this emergency kit – remember the needs of your pets. also Refill and re-check supplies AFTER EVERY STORM or emergency event. don’t forget – After a storm hits you may be able to return home in a matter of days. But re-entry may take much longer, depending on storm or event damage - so plan for the worst-case scenario. emergency officials also urge us all to Make a checklist of preparations to be made before an evacuation and go over it with your family now. then, Review it again when a storm is in the Gulf of Mexico. once more, hurricane season starts this coming tuesday, and experts expect an active storm season. for more tips and access to weather information, go to our website – www.kshn.com – and click on the disaster preparedness link on our front page. from there, you can link to the national weather service, the national hurricane center, supply tips and lists plus other disaster preparedness links.

new booster seat law

news story

05.31.10 (FOR MONDAY)

law enforcement officers will begin issuing citations tomorrow for those in violation of the state’s new child’s booster seat law. the new texas law actually took effect last september, but law enforcement officers have only been issuing written or verbal WARNINGS since then. senate bill 61 requires all children younger than 8 years old who are less than 4-foot, 9-inches tall to ride in a booster seat. the old law was for kids less than 5 years old and shorter than 3-feet tall. the new law also requires that all safety seats and booster seats be installed according to manufacturer’s instructions. texas department of public safety reports the correct use of booster seats can reduce the risk of injury by 60 percent COMPARED to the use of an ADULT safety belt alone. although there is no law that prevents kids from being properly secured in the front seat of a vehicle, dps officials say the SAFEST place for a child is in the back seat, properly buckled in a child safety or booster seat. experts also say children under the age of 13 should never ride in the front seat of a vehicle with an active passenger air bag. once more, the state’s new booster seat law went into effect on september 1 last year, but officers have only been issuing warnings. starting tomorrow, citations will be issued with fines of not more than $25 for a first offense and no more than $250 for SUBSEQUENT offenses. this new texas law requires all children less than 8 years old and under 4 feet 9 inches tall to ride in a booster seat.
