MOTHERS DAY

LOCAL NEWS

DATE:

The majority of countries that celebrate Mother's Day do so on the second Sunday of May. On this day, it is common for Mothers to be lavished with presents and special attention from their families, friends and loved ones. But it hasn’t always been this way. AN OFFICIAL DAY FOR CELEBRATION OF MOTHERS HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED IN THE UNITED STATES FOR LESS THAN 100 YEARS. HOWEVER, the tradition of honoring Motherhood is rooted in antiquity, and past OBSERVANCES typically had strong symbolic and spiritual overtones; societies tended to celebrate Goddesses and symbols rather than THEIR MOMS.  One earlY historical record of a society celebrating MotherD can be found among ancient Egyptians. THEY held an annual festival to honor the goddess Isis, commonly regarded as Mother of the pharaohs. IN the 1600's a clerical decree in England broadened thAT celebration to include real Mothers, earning the name Mothering Day.  Mother was the guest of honor at feasts prepaired in her honor. THEY were presented with cakes and flowers, as well as a visit from their beloved and distant children.  When the first English settlers came to America, they discontinued the tradition of Mothering Day. While IN THE UNITED KINGDOM IT would live on, the American Mother’s Day wAS CREATED —with an entirely new history—BUT NOT UNTIL centuries later. The first North American Mother’s Day was conceptualized with Julia Ward Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870. Despite having penned The Battle Hymn of the Republic 12 years earlier, Howe WAS distraught by the death and carnage of the Civil War AND called on Mother’s to come together and protest what she saw as the futility of their Sons killing the Sons of other Mothers. she called for an international Mother's Day celebrating peace and motherhood. A West Virginia women’s group led by Anna Reeves Jarvis began to celebrate an adaptation of Howe’s holiday. In order to re-unite families and neighbors divided between the Union and Confederate sides of the War BETWEEN THE STATES, the group held a Mother’s Friendship Day. After Anna Reeves Jarvis died, her daughter Anna M. Jarvis campaigned TO creatE an official Mother’s Day in remembrance of her mother and in honor of peace. In 1908 a proposAL IN THE U.S. SENATE TO MAKE Mother's Day a national holiday at the request of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). was defeated, but by 1909 forty-six states were holding Mother's Day services as well as parts of Canada and Mexico. In 1912 West Virginia became the first state to officially recognize Mother's Day, and in 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed it into national observance, declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

according to the legal filings, testing of the sinkhole has indicated elevated levels of toxic and hazardous wastes, chemicals, solvents and other substances. it also claims the city of daisetta’s water supply has, or will be, penetrated by these compounds. as a result of the sinkhole and the contaminations, the suit claims the value of property in daisetta has been negatively impacted in a dramatic way. attorney rick mcguire said the suit does not specify damages because the total cost of reparations has not yet been determined.

so, the massive sinkhole in daisetta has led the city of daisetta and many of its residents to file suit against five companies – deloach vacuum service, de-vac incorporated, triangle PETROLEUM service, saratoga oil company, and exxonmobile oil. attorney rick mcguire – a liberty native - contends the city of liberty’s north water well, which is the city’s primary source of water, is 6.3 miles downhill from the daisetta sinkhole. as a result, he claims it is also threatened by the same chemicals, allegedly found in daisetta’s water supply. kshn will have more on this suit and the potential impact on the city of liberty in a future newscast,
