lisd against new incense LOCAL NEWS 05.19.10 liberty isd trustees have taken a stand against the use of a marijuana-mimicking substance that is being sold in local retail establishments. kshn recently reported that Liberty Police Department has seen AN increase in the number of LOCAL youth and adults using incense and potpourri products to get high. While these products are usually labeled "Not For Human Consumption", ABusers typically smoke the product to get marijuana-like effects. during tuesday night’s liberty isd board meeting, school trustees approved a resolution asking liberty city council to explore the possibility of prohibiting the sale of these products within the liberty’s city limits. the resolution ACKNOWLEDGES these products have been confiscated on school PREMISES. according to liberty pd public information officer hugh bishop, the use of these products is a growing problem and CAN PRODUCE hallucinations, delusions, vomiting, agitation, pale skin, elevated blood pressure, along with other dangerous side effects. The products are marketed under different names like K2 and Space. Other product names BEING ABUSED ARE CALLED - Buzz, Spice, Magic Dragon, Dust, Serenity Now, Chimera, and Black Mamba. POLICE OFFICERS SAY These products sell for $15 TO $40 for A three gram package. The ABUSED incenses are a mixture of herbal and spice plant products but are sprayed with a potent chemical that can cause many adverse effects. Sometimes the products look similar in appearance to marijuana, while other times they resemble potpourri. LIBERTY POLICE have reported recent cases involving teens who were INTOXICATED from smoking the mixtures. MANY exhibited the tell-tale signs of marijuana use, but users were even more lethargic and "stoned" than a typical marijuana user. while these products are still legal to purchase in texas, users could still face charges related to intoxication laws already on the books. The offenses of Public Intoxication, Driving While Intoxicated, Intoxication Assault and Intoxication Manslaughter all have the same provisions DEFINING when a person is IMPAIRED. it says a person may be a danger to themselves or OTHERS because OF the introduction of any substance that causes them not to have the normal use of their mental or physical FACULTIES. that subject can be arrested and charged with the relevant intoxication law. Liberty Police are urging parents to discuss these products and the potentially dangerous effects with their kids. tuesday night, liberty isd trustees, who have seen these products on campus, are urging the city of liberty to explore ways to ban the sale of these marijuana-mimicking substances within the city limits.
