FOR AN INDIVIDUAL SPONSORSHIP CALL KATHLEEN BURNHAM AT 936-336-7135. $100 INDIVIDUAL SPONSORSHIPS WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE AT THE COUNTRY CLUB STARTING FRIDAY EVENING. tea chambers county news story 08.03.10 kshn has already reported on the texas education agency’s 2010 accountability ratings for liberty county school districts. here’s the state grades for those schools in chambers county. taking a look at their three independent school districts, barbers hill topped the list with the highest accountability rating of exemplary. both anahuac and east CHAMBERS isd are second best at recognized. we also reported this is the second year of what is called TEXAS projection measure or tpm. the houston CHRONICLE REPORTS that METHOD BOLSTERED 78 percent of all campus scores statewide by trying to predict how a student will score on future exams. the newspaper reports both barbers hill and east chambers isd benefited from that method of calculation while the anahuac school district did not receive a bump in ratings from tpm. now, let’s take a look at individual campuses in chambers county, starting with barbers hill isd where the elementary, primary, intermediate and middle school campuses were all rated exemplary. barbers hill high school achieved recognized status. then, in the school districts of anahuac and east chambers isd, all of those school campuses received a t.e.a. rating of recognized. texas education agency has four ratings, STARTING with the best - EXEMPLARY - followed by recognized, ACADEMICALLY ACCEPTABLE and then ACADEMICALLY unacceptable. based on that t.e.a. rating system, barbers hill isd is exemplary while the school DISTRICTS of ANAHUAC and east chambers are recognized. community garden news story 08 3 10 liberty community garden held its much advertised workday saturday, and group president tracy williams hailed the activity as a success. she said a hearty group of volunteers braved the texas heat to help bring the garden to life. "audio" also providing labor for last saturday’s workday were liberty county probationers. in addition to creating the garden, those in attendance pruned an oak tree that provides a great deal of shade nearby. "audio" located on the grounds of the old san jacinto ELEMENTARY school at the corner of grand avenue and texas, the new liberty community garden now has 56 raised beds measuring 4 by 8 feet each. individuals or groups can rent a garden space for $50 a year or $30 for a six-month growing season. FOR INFORMATION OR TO BECOME A SPONSOR, CALL SANDY AT THE LIBERTY COUNTY EXTENSION OFFICE AT 936-336-4558, EXT 221. lc 4-h riders News story 08.03.10 it has been another great year of COMPETITION for a group of local 4-h kids. we reported the celebrated liberty county 4-h HORSE mounted drill team won the state championship in both fast freestyle and precision riding. the team’s longtime drill master, tommy small, said that gives the team five championships this year. "audio" twenty eight kids from throughout liberty, chambers, hardin, and harris counties are part of the celebrated liberty county 4-h mounted drill team. this group has been very successful in recent years, and their drill master said that is a result of hard work from a lot of kids and parent volunteers. "audio" from 2003 through 2006, the local equestrians won the state championship in either fast freestyle or PRECISION. then in 2007, they won both titles. they nearly repeated that feat in 2008, missing out by one point in the freestyle event and winning the state championship in precision riding. last year, the liberty county mounted 4-h drill team captured the state championship in fast freestyle and placed third in precision riding. this group of talented 4-h kids topped it all this year galloping to two district titles, two state wins and a national CHAMPIONSHIP. Tommy small said it’s all part of the 4-h program. The National Weather Service statistical data shows that heat causes more fatalities per year than floods, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes combined. In the disastrous heat wave of 1980, more than 1,250 people died. In the heat wave of 1995 more than 700 deaths in the Chicago area were attributed to heat. the current FORECAST from the national weather service has TEMPERATURES reaching near 100 all week, with heat indices REACHING above 100. Heat Wave Safety Tips include - Slow down - Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated, or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day. Individuals at risk should stay in the coolest available place, not necessarily indoors. Dress for summer- Lightweight light-colored clothing reflects heat and sunlight, and helps your body maintain normal temperatures. Foods (like proteins) that increase heat production in the body, increasing core body TEMPERATURE AND increase water loss. Drink plenty of water or other non-alcohol fluids - Your body needs water to keep cool. Drink plenty of fluids even if you don't feel thirsty. Do not drink alcoholic beverages. spend more time in air-conditioned places - Air conditioning in homes and other buildings markedly reduces danger from the heat. If you cannot afford an air conditioner, spending some time each day (during hot weather) in an air conditioned environment affords some protection. Don't get too much sun - Sunburn makes the job of heat dissipation that much more difficult. Know These Heat Disorder Symptoms HEAT CRAMPS Painful spasms usually in muscles of legs and abdomen possible. Heavy sweating. First Aid: Firm pressure on cramping muscles, or gentle massage to relieve spasm. Give sips of water. If nausea occurs, discontinue use. HEAT EXHAUSTION: Heavy sweating, weakness, skin cold, pale and clammy. Pulse thready. Normal temperature possible. Fainting and vomiting. First Aid: Get victim out of sun. Lay down and loosen clothing. Apply cool, wet cloths. Fan or move victim to air conditioned room. Sips of water. If nausea occurs, discontinue use. If vomiting continues, seek immediate medical attention. HEAT STROKE (sunstroke): High body temperature. Hot dry skin. Rapid and strong pulse. Possible unconsciousness. First Aid: HEAT STROKE IS A SEVERE MEDICAL EMERGENCY. SUMMON EMERGENCY MEDICAL ASSISTANCE OR GET THE VICTIM TO A HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY. DELAY CAN BE FATAL. Move the victim to a cooler environment Reduce body temperature with cold bath or sponging. Use extreme caution. Remove clothing, use fans and air conditioners. If temperature rises again, repeat process.
