BUDGET SHORTFALL DISD LOCAL NEWS DATE: 07 13 10 IT SEEMS VIRTUALLY EVERYONE IS FEELING THE FINANCIAL PINCH OF THE ECONOMIC RECESSION. WE HAVE ALREADY TOLD YOU, SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE NO EXCEPTION. NEW DAYTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT MIKE KUHRT SAID, AS THEY GET READY FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE WILL SHARE IN THE PROJECTED STATE SHORTFALL EXPECTED TO RUN IN THE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS. SUPERINTENDENT MIKE KUHRT SAID THE DAYTON SCHOOL DISTRICT, SINCE 2005, HAS
RECEIVED A GUARANTEED AMOUNT OF ABOUT $5300 PER STUDENT FROM THE STATE. EVEN THOUGH VIRTUALLY ALL STATE AND LOCAL TAX FUNDED AGENCIES ARE TIGHTENING THEIR BELTS FOR THEIR NEW BUDGETS, AT DAYTON ISD, SUPERINTENDENT MIKE KUHRT SAID THEY BELIEVE THE TAX RATE THAT WILL BE SET IN AUGUST SHOULD REMAIN WHERE IT IS PRESENTLY. PROSPERITY BANK FIRE 7.13.10 THE LIBERTY FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED OUT MONDAY MORNING WHEN SMOKE WAS DETECTED IN THE MAIN VAULT OF THE PROSPERITY BANK – IN THE 500 BLOCK OF MAIN STREET. FIREMEN ARRIVED TO FIND AN ELECTRICAL ODOR AND SLIGHT SMOKE HAZE IN THE BIG WALK IN VAULT. BANK PRESIDENT MARSHA LA FOUR SAID BUSINESS OPERATIONS WERE NEVER SUSPENDED AND THERE WAS NO FLAMES. ONLY A SLIGHT AMOUNT OF SMOKE PLUS AN ELECTRICAL BURN ODOR. FIREFIGHTERS THOUGHT IMMEDIATELY THEY WOULD FIND A FLORESCENT LIGHT FIXTURE BALLAST FAILED. AS IT TURNED OUT, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED.. BREAKERS WERE SWITCHED OFF AND A THOROUGH INSPECTION WITH FIRE DEPARTMENT HEAT DETECTORS WAS CONDUCTED. THE LIGHT FIXTURE WAS DISCONNECTED AND POWER WAS RESTORED WITH NO DAMAGE. AN ELECTRICIAN WAS CALLED TO REPAIR THE FIXTURE AND, AS WE SAID, NO BANKING OPERATIONS WERE INTERRUPTED AT PROSPERITY BANK IN LIBERTY.. . hunger buster news story 07.13.10 the liberty hunger busters youth summer lunch program has added something new. volunteers are now passing out a free snack along with each free lunch. dorreen charlton, director of food services for liberty isd, says the hunger buster program is now serving an average of 850 to 900 free meals and snacks each day. as has been reported, hunger busters is a communitywide partnership involving liberty school district, area churches, texas agrilife extension service and many volunteers. these free lunches and snacks have nothing to do with family income. all kids - 1 to 18 – are welcome. this community PARTNERSHIP is providing free meals and an extra snack mondays through fridays from noon to 1 p.m. at locations throughout the liberty school district. this includes the san jacinto elementary campus on grand AVENUE and the liberty middle school on jefferson drive. there are also nine SATELLITE feeding locations. that way, kids who don’t have TRANSPORTATION to the school campuses can go to a participating site in their neighborhood for a free meal. this summer, these locations include the liberty city park PAVILION, liberty MUNICIPAL library, the vfw hall on main street, and the parking lot of the moss bluff VOLUNTEER fire department at lake granada. among the churches hosting this free lunch program are the assembly of god on texas at grand, central baptist church on highway 90 at layl drive, calvary baptist church south of moss bluff on fm 563, st miles baptist church on u.s. 90 in ames, and lily of the valley baptist church on south oil field road in liberty. the HUNGER buster youth summer lunch program will continue each weekday all summer long providing FREE LUNCHes - and the recently added free snacks - to all kids from 1 to 18 years old. for information, call alexis cordova at 936-336-4558, ext 221, and doreen charlton at 336-7213. genealogy program news story 07.13.10 the liberty county genealogical society will meet next tuesday, july 20, at 10 a.m. in the sam houston regional library and research center. this month’s guest speaker is nancy brandli, past president of the local genealogical group. her program is titled "What’s in a name – naming PATTERNS and PATRONYMICS as clues to researching your ANCESTRY. nancy brandili is a KNOWLEDGEABLE genealogist who will UNTANGLE the web of generational naming patterns and derivatives in order to help others discover their ancestry using these tools. this liberty county genealogical society monthly MEETING is next tuesday, july 20, at 10 a.m. in the upstairs meeting room of the sam houston regional library and research center. the elevator is in operation. for information on the society, you can visit their website by going to ours at www.kshn.com and CLICKING on the organizations link. stadium lights news story 07.13.10 the u.s. consumer product safety commission has issued a RECALL notice for a specific brand of stadium light poles that officials say pose a risk of serious injury or death to bystanders if crushed by a falling pole. two liberty county school districts are on a list of those using the alleged defective light standards. now administrators from both districts say there is no danger locally. both dayton and hull-daisetta isd appear on that list of impacted CUSTOMERS of whitco company lp of fort worth. hull-daisetta school superintendent mary huckabay (huck-a-bee) said the district’s poles on that recall list actually blew down during hurricane ike back in 2008. since that time, they have all been replaced with a different brand of stadium light poles. as for those whitco company products in the dayton isd, assistant superintendent doug coleman said they were notified of a potential problem last year. at that point, disd hired engineers to inspect the potentially dangerous footings. after that study, those engineers told disd officials there isn’t a problem in dayton. the government’s recall notice says the problem poles can fracture or crack, which can cause the 1 to 4 ton poles to tumble to the ground. as of june, the product safety commission had CONFIRMED 11 accidents in which whitco COMPANY poles COLLAPSED. the majority of incidents occurred in texas, the most recent was in the town of argyle. again, while two local school districts are among the whitco company customers listed on a GOVERNMENT recall notice, top administrators at both districts say there is no danger locally. in the case of hull-daisetta isd, the poles were replaced following hurricane ike. as for dayton isd, their light poles have been inspected by engineers who confirm there are no structural problems. old-river winfree news story 07.13.10 the second old river-winfree founders day celebration is set for this coming friday and saturday. the ole river-winfree founders day kicks off friday at 8 a.m. and FESTIVITIES continue throughout that day with a natural beauty pageant for girls ages birth through 18. both friday and saturday, the celebration includes opportunities to shop with a variety of food and merchandise vendors. also, local history buff, boyce morris, says he will be displaying artifacts he has unearthed from the old river-winfree area using a metal detector. "audio" then this saturday, founders day begins early with a trail ride at 7 a.m. a 5k run/walk in memory of private first class wesley riggs starts a 7:30 a.m. this saturday. that 5k event benefits both the wounded WARRIOR project and a memorial scholarship fund for barbers hill graduating seniors. the late wesley riggs graduated from barbers hill high school and enlisted in the army. he died in tikrit, iraq, in 2003 from injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated. other activities at the old river-winfree founder’s day celebration, this saturday, include a dog parade at 9:30 followed by a motorcycle parade at 11. a cupcake-pie baking contest starts at noon with a photography contest at 2 p.m. and historical reenactments starting at 3. an all-string band called the caney creek revelers will be playing music popular in the 1800s starting at 7:30 this saturday night. also on saturday, just for the kids, there will be a texas-size water slide, face painting, and pony rides. again, the old river-winfree founders day celebration is set for this friday and saturday on the fairgrounds behind the old river-winfree city hall on fm 565. organizers also promise plenty of fun for the whole family. for information or to sign up for events, go to our homepage at www.kshn.com for a link to old river-winfree FOUNDERS day.
