water and electric meters

news story

07.06.10

liberty city council is considering a plan to replace all of the water and electric meters across town with new state-of-the-art meters. city manager gary broz is RECOMMENDING this project because – he says - the current meters are very old and are not ACCURATELY measuring USAGE. as a result, the city hs confirmed they are under billing customers and, THEREFORE, losing money. if this $2.5 million project to replace meters across the city of liberty gets council approval, it will be funded through certificates of obligation. mr. broz said liberty has some older debt set to expire and interest rates are at a historic low. he said the project would not change the city’s tax rate. concerning the current water meters, liberty’s city manager said the city is experiencing a 30 percent loss from the water it pumps to citizens to what is actually billed.

gary broz said THe electrical loss due to bad meters is around 17 percent.

"audio"

One nice feature about the PROPOSED meters is the ability for them to be remotely CONTROLLED and read, right from city hall.

"audio"

Gary broz said it currently takes two city workers one month to read all of the water meters across liberty.

"audio"

While gary broz said the cost of these meters will not impact liberty’s property tax rate, liberty’s city manager did say the more accurate readings will have an impact on utility bills.

"audio"

So, because the city of liberty is losing water and electricity that is not being ACCURATELY measured by current meters, liberty city manager gary broz is recommending city council replace all utility meters throughout the city. The $2.5 million project would be funded through certificates of obligation without impacting the property tax rate; however, customers will likely see an increase in their utility bills if their current meters have been underreporting USAGE. if this plan is approved by liberty city council, replacement could begin by late august with the project finished 90 days after that.

Here’s some pre-season football prognostications for you. The dayton broncos are in the pre-season top 25 statewide in class 4-a - that according to "dave campbell’s 2010 texas football". The well-known magazine - now on newsstands – is in its 51st season of detailing high school, college and professional football in the state of texas. Dayton is picked to once again win the district 19-4a title this season, and the broncos are 13th in the publication’s statewide class 4-a preseason poll. last year the charges of jerry stewart advanced to the REGIONAL finals of class 4a, where they fell to the brenham cubs. incidentally, brenham is ranked third in the MAGAZINES pre-season class 4-a poll this year. if dave campbell’s magazine is on target, crosby will finish second to dayton in district 19-4a and BAYTOWN goose creek memorial will place third. barbers hill is seen finishing fourth in that eight-team district. reviewing district 22-3a football, the magazine predicts COLDSRING will win the seven-team district. they see cleveland FINISHING second with a new coach with liberty in sixth and tarkington seventh. The long-running football publication predicts newton to win the new district 10-2a, division 1, which includes a number of area teams. dave campbell’s expects winnie east-chambers to be second in that district followed in third by anahuac. rounding out the eight-team district 10-2a, in order of their projected finish, are buna, woodville, hardin, kountz and warren. finishing up the predictions on local teams, the hull-daisetta bobcats are seen fourth best out of five teams in the new district 11-a, division 1. again, "dave campbell’s 2010 texas football" is now on newsstands. the well-respected pre-season compilation of texas football teams places dayton at number 13 statewide in class 4-a. we will have more details from "dave campbell’s texas football" in future newscasts. all of the liberty, dayton, houston texans and texas longhorns games will be heard here on kshn and kshn.com. we will also have some other local high schools broadcast live on-line only – more on that later.
