a final reminder that all property appraisal PROTESTS must be filed today. the actual deadline was yesterday, but since it was a holiday, protests received by the end of business today will be accepted. the 20-10 PRELIMINARY property tax APPRAISALS were mailed out back in april. protest forms were included with appraisal notices in the mail. the property owner’s name and address is already on the form – simply check the appropriate areas of the form, sign it and return it by days end or fax it to 936-336-8390. protests can also be filed online at the appraisal district’s website. go to www.kshn.com and click on government, then scroll down to the liberty county central appraisal district link. the c.a.d. main office in liberty will be open today from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. their phone number is 936-336-5722. once more, while yesterday was the deadline for property owners to file a protest on their 2010 appraisal, the central appraisal district will accept PROTESTS through today as being timely.

over the memorial day weekend, kshn reported the city of liberty is asking for your opinions on various aspects of life in liberty. on the city’s recently upgraded webpage, you will find a link to this survey. for those not comfortable with the internet, copies of the survey are available at the utility desk at city hall. either way, it will take only a few minutes to complete. april reiss (reese), city administrative assistant, said survey questions pertain to garbage service and recycling. the survey also asks you to rate services from various departments and how responsive the city administration is to your questions. it also asks about things like public safety, usage of city parks, and your opinion of liberty jubilee. the city’s web address is cityofliberty.org. you can also go to www.kshn.com and link from our government tab. when you are on the city’s website, there is a blue bar at mid-page that says "what’s going on". click on that, and it will take you to the start of the city of liberty’s survey. also over the weekend, we reported that law enforcement officers will begin issuing citations today for those in violation of the state’s new child’s booster seat law. the new texas law actually took effect last september, but law enforcement officers have only been issuing written or verbal WARNINGS since then. senate bill 61 requires all children younger than 8 years old who are less than 4-foot, 9-inches tall to ride in a booster seat. so, starting today, citations will be issued with fines of not more than $25 for a first offense and no more than $250 for SUBSEQUENT offenses.

kshn has reported the trinity river national wildlife refuge has received funding for CONSTRUCTION of a new administrative office BUILDING to be located on the refuge itself. now, a draft environmental ASSESSMENT of that HEADQUARTERS facility has been completed and is available for review at the current office in the 1300 block of north main in liberty. refuge manager stuart marcus said the planned facility will be built on refuge land on fm 1011, directly across from the sam houston regional library and research center. the administrative BUILDING will be about 2,400 square feet. if additional funds become AVAILABLE, a STORAGE building and a visitors center may be built adjacent to the headquarters. in addition to the office building, current plans call for construction of utility lines, parking lots and a new driveway. concerning the plans, stuart marcus said he is excited that after 16 years they will soon have permanent space to call home. again, the trinity river national wildlife refuge has received funding for a new office building to be located on refuge land ACROSS for the sam houston center on fm 1011, just north of liberty. as part of the planning process, the refuge staff has prepared an environmental assessment that is now available for public review at the refuge’s current office, 1351 north main in liberty.

SPIRIT OF SHARING IS A NON-0PORIFT ORGANIZATION AND THAT MEANS YOUR GIFT CAN BE A TAX DEDUCTION. THESE ITEMS THAT ARE USEABLE WILL BE SOLD AT THE THRIFT SHOP AND THE MONEY IS USED TO BUY FOOD FOR THE SOS FOOD PANTRY AND OTHER SPIRIT OF SHARING PROGRAMS. SOS VOLUNTEERS SAY DONATIONS HAVE FALLEN OFF BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMY AND THEY NEED YOUR HELP TO CONTINUE HELPING THOSE TEMPORARILY IN NEED.
