LOCAL HONORED BY LIONS

LIBERTY HAS A TREMENDOUSLY ACTIVE LIONS CLUB. ONE OF THEIR VERY BEST IS R. B. MCDONALD WAS RECENTLY THE HONORED RECIPIENT OF THE LIONS PAST DISTRICT GOVERNORS AWARD. REV. JAY BARNES, PASTOR OF THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, WHERE R.B. MCDONALD ATTENDS ANNOUNCED THE RECOGNITION SUNDAY.

R.B. IS A 50-YEAR MEMBER OF LIONS AND FIRST JOINED IN SAN MARCOS IN 1959. HIS JOB WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MOVED HIM AROUND A BIT UNTIL HE GOT TO LIBERTY AND THEN HE WAS HOME. "MAC" HAS BEEN A DRIVING FORCE IN THE LIBERTY CLUB SERVING AS VICE PRESIDENT, PRESIDENT, DIRECTOR AND TAIL TWISTER. HE WAS A FOUNDER OF THE POPULAR FLAGS ACROSS LIBERTY TO RAISE FUNDS FOR LIONS PROJECTS. THE FLAGS IDEA MAKES THE LOCAL SERVICE CLUB OVER $20,000 EACH YEAR AS MEMBERS PLACING FLAGS ACROSS OUR COMMUNITY ON SPECIAL HOLIDAYS. ON THE BIGGER LIONS CLUB SCENE R. B. MCDONALD HAS BEEN DISTRICT ZONE CHAIRMAN, DEPUTY DISTRICT GOVERNOR, AND HELPED BEGIN CLUBS IN BOTH BATSON AND THE NOON CLUB DAYTON,. LION R. B. MCDONALD’S CITATION FOR THIS VERY SPECIAL HONOR FROM LION’S PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR ALSO CITED THE LIBERTY MAN FOR HIS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT OUTSIDE OF LIONS. HE’S BEEN INVOLVED IN THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, THE SPIRIT OF SHARING CHARITY, HE HAS SERVED AS A LEADER IN THE NEW HUNGER BUSTER PROGRAM WHICH FEEDS CHILDREN IN THE SUMMER TIME WHILE SCHOOL IS OUT. HE VOLUNTEERS AT THE STATE PRISON VISITORS CENTER IN DAYTON. COORDINATES BLOOD DRIVES HELD AT THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN LIBERTY. HE HAS SERVED ON THE CHURCH ADMINISTRATIVE BOARD, MISSION COMMITTEE, CEMETERY COMMITTEE AND MORE. R. B, MCDONALD HAS ALREADY BEEN HONORED WITH THE LIONS APPRECIATION AWARD, THE LIONS SERVICE AWARD, HE IS A MELVIN JONES FELLOW- NAMED FOR THE FOUNDER OF LIONS, THE LIONS INTERNATIONAL CABINET AWARD AND HAS BEEN LION OF THE YEAR IN THE LIBERTY CLUB FIVE TIMES.. R. B MCDONALD WAS NOMINATED FOR THE PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S AWARD BY LOCAL CLUB PRESIDENT GREG TURNER. . HE WAS PRESENTED THAT RECOGNITION JUST LAST WEEK.

kshn has run news stories the past two days detailing the 2010 PRELIMINARY property tax APPRAISALS. those were mailed out back in april. as reported, property values are down 2.35 percent countywide, but on the other hand some folks have seen increases, ESPECIALLY property owners in liberty isd. alan d. conner, chief appraiser with the liberty county appraisal district, encourages those who disagree with the appraisal district’s numbers to file a protest.

The chief appraiser said there are more than 100,000 properties in liberty county. in a typical year, between 3,000 and 4,000 protests are filed, and only 150 to 300 of those ever make it BEFORE THe appraisal review board. Alan Conner said that’s because most are resolved before going that far.

in order to expand the opportunities to meet with an appraiser, alan conner said the central appraisal district’s main office in liberty is now open on saturdays.

property owners who want to file a protest must do so by may 31. protest forms were included with appraisal notices in the mail. the property owner’s name and address is already on the form – simply check the appropriate areas of the form, sign it and return it by hand, letter, or fax it to 936-336-8390. protests can also be filed online at the appraisal district’s website. go to kshn.com and click on government, then scroll down to the liberty county central appraisal district link. the central appraisal district’s main office in liberty is open monday through friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and those special saturday hours from 8 to noon. those who have questions can call the main c.a.d. office in liberty at 936-336-5722. the dayton annex office of the appraisal district’s phone number is 936-257-8395. that dayton location is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. those in north liberty county may call the cleveland c.a.d. office at 281-593-1605 or visit, in person, monday through friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. one final note, chief appraiser alan conner said the state comptroller’s website has an educational video that describes the protest process. that can be viewed from the liberty c.a.d.’s WEBSITE. just click on the link "how to present your case at an a.r.b. hearing."

The National Day of Prayer is an annual day of observance, designated by the United States Congress, when people are asked "to turn to God in prayer and meditation". The law formalizing its annual observance was enacted in 1952. LOCALLY, THE NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER CEREMONY WILL BE HELD ON THE LIBERTY COUNTY COURTHOUSE STEPS TODAY AT 12:10. PEOPLE OF ALL FAITHS ARE INVITED TO THE EVENT.

COMING UP SATURDAY, MAY 8 STARTING AT 9 AM, LEE COLLEGE IN BAYTOWN WILL HOLD A REBEL PREVIEW DAY. Natiesha Walker STUDENT RECRUITER FOR LEE COLLEGE, LIBERTY HIGH GRADUATE, AND LEE COLLEGE ALUMNI, SAID THE DAY IS FOR ANYONE ONE INTERESTED IN LEE COLLEGE, HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO RETURNING ADULTS. The Rebel Preview Day is an open house to showcase both academic and technical programs, student support services, and student life. The Rebel Preview Day will be an opportunity for prospective students to gain a better understanding of career choices, and learn how a college degree or certificate can help them gain the training and skills needed to succeed in the workplace.
