brotherhood banquet news story 02.16.10 calling men of all faiths - the 84th annual men’s brotherhood banquet is this thursday at first united methodist church. this year’s guest speaker is the honorable willie e.b. blackmon of houston. he was one of texas a&m university’s first four african american athletic recruits and was on the 1970 southwest conference CHAMPIONSHIP team. willie blackmon also was on the world record indoor mile relay NATIONAL championship team. he later graduated from thurgood marshall school of law and pursued a legal career. later, judge blackmon PURSUED a higher calling in the military as a judge advocate. the local brotherhood banquet was first held in 1927, and it has been held, without interruption, since then. the national brotherhood week did not begin until several years after the first men’s event here in liberty. that makes this storied liberty gathering the oldest CONTINUOUSLY held event of its kind in america. once more, men of all faiths are invited to the 84th annual men’s brotherhood banquet this thursday at 7 p.m. in fellowship hall at first united methodist church of liberty. tickets for the traditional turkey and dressing banquet are $8 and available from the church office or any member of the methodist men’s bible class.
