news story

02.12.10

kshn reported earlier this week that liberty city council approved a RESOLUTION expressing the city’s intent to issue certificates of obligation to fund an ELECTRICAL substation upgrade to serve the new boomerang tube MANUFACTURING plant. liberty mayor carl pickett said that decision paves the way for the city to issue up to $3.4 million in indebtedness once the city and boomerang officials agree on matters related to the substation and electrical rates.

boomerang purchased the old national pipe and tube facility and has been making upgrades to that 489,690-square-foot building. because of the manufacturing facility’s size, the city of liberty will need to update INFRASTRUCTURE. that includes construction of a more than $2 million electrical sub-station expansion. when fully OPERATIONAL, officials say the new boomerang tube will use as much electricity as the entire city now uses. with that in mind, city leaders and boomerang officials have been NEGOTIATIng electrical rates and how the costs for the substation and any other improvements will be recouped by the city. mayor pickett said those DISCUSSIONS will continue next week.

boomerang officials said they intend to be operational by august, and the COMPANY will INITIALly hire ABOUT 250 PEOPLE with plans to employ a total of 350 when fully operational. the city will publish a legal notice in the vindicator newspaper next week. then, liberty city council must wait 60 days before proceeding. if council votes to issue those CERTIFICATES of obligation, the indebtedness would be paid back over time with an escalating payment to correspond with the retirement of other city debt – mayor carl picket said that would minimize the impact on taxpayers while paving the way to bring jobs and industry to town.
