new rest stops 01.19.10 texas history is about to come alive for motorists traveling along 1-10 through chambers county. Not far from where some of the first shots in the fight for Texas independence were fired and on property where the "Turtle Bayou Resolutions" were signed, texas department of TRANSPoRtATION will oversee the construction of two new safety rest areas. a groundbreaking ceremony is planned for this coming monday at 11 a.m. at the site of the current eastbound i-10 weigh station between state highway 61 and fm 1724. it is a joint ceremony between txdot, chambers county, the west chambers county chambers of commerce, anahuac chamber of commerce and winnie chamber of commerce. these travel and visitors centers will be built along I-10 at the two weigh stations just east of the Trinity River Bridge. One will be constructed on the north side and the other on the south side of i-10. mark shepherd, spokesman for the beaumont OFFICE of txdot, said these visitors stops will be more than just rest areas. Each center will have interactive exhibits, an interpretive center, nature trails, picnic tables, restrooms, and parking for large trucks as well as passenger vehicles. Free internet access will also be provided at the new rest areas. These centers will be a bit different than many other travel centers because of the special local history. These are being built on property once-owned by James Taylor White, an early Texas pioneer and one of the state's first cattle barons. it was also the site of the beginnings of Texas' war for independence from Mexico. White lived on the land in 1828. Archaeologists have discovered the remains of his original homestead, including portions of the old foundation, artifacts and an old cistern. Most, if not all of the artifacts, will be displayed at the centers. To show off the local natural attractions there will be boardwalks and extensive nature trails allowing visitors to relax and learn some Texas history. a groundbreaking ceremony for these two new travel centers along 1-10 – just east of the trinity river in chambers county - will begin at 11 a.m. monday at the eastbound weigh station. for those traveling east, just take exit 812 and stay on the feeder road for 2 miles. use the entrance to the weigh station on your left. Spawglass Civil Construction Inc. is the project contractor. Work on the $14 million centers is expected to be completed in mid-2012. |
