-VOLUME 20 NO. 224 MONDAY NOV. 28TH, 2005- **************************************************** DPS Trooper Tommy Chase says a small compact car driven by Dean Morales-35, of Dayton, hydroplaned into the path of a big tractor trailer rig Saturday morning around 7:50. Morales was killed instantly The accident occurred, during heavy rain, about 400 yards inside the Liberty Co. line on SH 146 south of Dayton. Augustin Martinez, driver of the big rig was not hurt. **************************************************** Local retailers saw sales as good or better than last year for the 1st day of holiday shopping last Friday. Dayton Walgreen Store Manager Terry Vaughn said customers were lined up waiting to get in when the store opened. Some spent hours in line at Liberty Wal-Mart. Sales better than 2004 are reported at Liberty Palais Royal and Baskins. Word from the Vinyard in Dayton and Just for You-Liberty is that both gift stores were very steady Friday. **************************************************** A Grand Jury will decide if charges will be filed and against whom in the chase and shooting incident in North Liberty County Saturday Nov. 19th.We reported Daniel Mostalez-41 was said to be chasing and ramming another truck with his wife Terri and the driver, David Isenhower, 44. Liberty Co. Sheriff’s Capt. Moore, retired Superintendent of the Dayton school district, died yesterday morning at home in Dayton after a long fight with cancer. Funeral services are Saturday at 2 at First United Methodist Church in Dayton. Visitation is Friday, from 2 until 8 at Pace Stancil Funeral Chapel-Dayton. **************************************************** 19-yr. old Kayla Moore, Hardin, was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital after a 1:30 Tuesday morning wreck on Hwy. 146. Police say she was not wearing a seat belt and complained of neck and shoulder pain but was alert and responsive. **************************************************** Chairman of First Liberty National Bank Charles Wiggins announced Monday, that Diane Huddleston has joined FLNB as Vice President of Loans. Wiggins said he was excited to have someone with Huddleston’s banking experience on the FLNB team. Huddleston has already resigned as Branch Manager of Wachovia Bank. She began her new position on Monday. **************************************************** A 58-year-old Willis man was found dead in a deer stand yesterday morning by his son. According to JP #1 Bobby Rader, Douglas Thompson and his son were hunting on a deer lease in Knights Forest subdivision. Collen Thompson heard the horn on his fathers’ truck and thought the father was ready to go. Bobby Radar said the father was in the deer stand pressing the panic button on the truck keys attempting to signal for help. By the time the son arrived, his father was dead. JP Radar said the Willis man had a history of heart troubles. **************************************************** The Texas Supreme Court has released their long-awaited ruling on the constitutionality of the current “Robin Hood “ plan of public school finance. State Representative John Otto said the high court upheld a portion of a lower court ruling, contending the way the funding system is implemented constitutes a state property tax, which the state constitution does not allow. Otto said lawmakers would be back in Austin for at least one more special session on school finance reform sometime between mid-March and April of next year to try and bring the system into compliance with the court ruling. -VOLUME 20 NO. 222 TUESDAY NOV. 22ND, 2005 **************************************************** Liberty County Judge Lloyd Kirkham made it official yesterday with a letter that he does not intend to seek a 4th term in office. At the end of his term, in 2006, he and his wife Cordella, plan to travel and spend time with their grandchildren. Some of the accomplishments he cited during his almost 12 years were improvement of roads, and privatization of the county jail. A new annex in Dayton, and many businesses and industries have located in Liberty County. In the letter delivered to local news media, Lloyd Kirkham thanked voters for their confidence in allowing him to represent them as County Judge. **************************************************** The US Department of Defense’s Office of the Inspector General has set up a toll free hot line for reporting cases of fraud in areas affected by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Brad Crane with the Federal Emergency Management Agency said the most common fraudulent claims are multiple claims filed on the same damaged property. Crane said penalties vary, but pointed out that Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot has demonstrated his office will aggressively prosecute this type of fraud. To report incidents of disaster fraud, call 1-866-720-5721. **************************************************** In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, the Liberty County Courthouse will close at noon tomorrow, and remain closed until Monday. City offices in Dayton and Liberty will be closed Thursday and Friday. There will be no garbage service in either town on Thursday, but pick up will resume on Friday. All Banks and Post Offices will be closed on Thursday only. **************************************************** As of yesterday, the Liberty County Commissioners have lifted the burn ban for Liberty County. From Chambers County, Judge Jimmy Sylvia’s office, their burn ban is still in place. **************************************************** Liberty ISD Superintendent Mona Chadwick said Hurricane Rita did about $150,000 worth of damage to buildings across the district. She said the worst damage was to the old, now unoccupied San Jacinto School Building on Grand Ave., with major roof damage, and water in the building. Superintendent Chadwick said she is confident what is not covered by insurance will be covered with help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The 15-year-old was the subject of an Amber Alert in July, though investigators determined she had left home voluntarily. Capt. Fairchild said Krista Dorsey was identified through dental records. Investigators have not yet been able to determine what caused her death. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 936-336-4500. **************************************************** Liberty School Trustees Tuesday night voted unanimously to purchase two new 81-passenger buses from Thomas Bus Sales at a total cost of $122, 348. Board members also gave the nod to a $35,908 bid from Dayton Electric to replace the cooler/freezer in Liberty High School’s Cafeteria. Saturday his home was destroyed by fire. He said he splattered cooking grease into the fire. It ignited and he had to flee, along with two other residents of his home at 607 Trinity. 3312 near Plum Grove in No. Liberty Co. Of the 40,000 registered voters in Liberty County, 1, 042 voted early in Tuesday’s State Constitutional Amendment Election. Several voting boxes have been consolidated for tomorrow. Voters living in precincts #7, #12, #20, #23 and #27 will all vote at the Cleveland Courthouse Annex. Resident of #10, #22 and #26 vote at the Dayton Fire Station. Those assigned to vote in #5, #19, #28, #35 or #36 cast ballots at the courthouse. Voters in boxes #8, #9, #25 or #32 - #34 vote tomorrow at the Tarkington School Bldg. Voting boxes #24, #30 and #31 are grouped at the Westlake Fire Station.. Others vote at their regular locations. **************************************************** Co. Tax Collector Mark McClelland said most County residents will get their 2005 tax statements this week. Deadline to pay without penalty is January 31st. A 7% penalty on any unpaid balance begins growing monthly after that. Property owners can save by paying as much of the taxes as they can before that. **************************************************** DA Mike Little said a change in criminal law in Texas since September 1st is the law prohibiting sexual conduct between family members is expanded to include current and former stepparents and their stepchildren. It’s no longer legal for first cousins to marry and the age to marry is up from 14 to 16 YOA. **************************************************** The Liberty football season is over with a 35 to 19 loss to Barbers Hill Friday. That coupled with Huffman’s win over Cleveland bumps Liberty from the playoffs. Dayton Broncos locked up the District 19-4A title beating Crosby 21 to 3. Dayton is in the playoffs. -VOLUME 20 NO. 210 THURSDAY NOV. 3RD, 2005- **************************************************** Assistant County Attorney Mark Beausoleil said the Army Corp. of Engineers has set a deadline for their contractors to make a final pass through Liberty County picking up Hurricane Rita debris. Residents are asked to get the last of the storm debris to the edge of the roadway by this Monday, November 7th. Beausoleil said, so far, contractors have picked up between 75,000 and 100,000 cubic yards of debris. **************************************************** Proposition #8 on the Nov. 8th Constitutional Amendment Ballot would clear titles for certain land located specifically in Upshur and Smith Counties. State Senator Tommy Williams said those lands have been the subject of numerous lawsuits when it was discovered a surveying error made before the turn of the 20th Century left them open to fresh claims. Senator Williams said passage of the amendment would save taxpayers the expense of any future state litigation over this matter. **************************************************** We reported earlier that Liberty City Council meetings were being held in the First Liberty National Bank Community Room during construction of the new Liberty City Hall. Due to damage caused by Hurricane Rita, Liberty City Hall offices had to move, and now the council meetings will move too. Effective immediately, the city council’s temporary meeting location is in the rear of the temporary city hall offices inside the old adult and juvenile probation offices, just across Sam Houston St. from the old city hall. Public access for council meetings is through the single door on Travis St. across from First Liberty National Bank. The meeting room is only a few steps inside that door. **************************************************** Most of South Liberty County High School football teams finish their regular district season tomorrow night. One south Liberty County team has already secured a play off berth, Dayton. Hardin and Hull Daisetta must win Friday to continue on in post season play.
