Academic Decathlon Students Awarded Medals and Scholarships

While other Liberty High School students were beginning spring break, Liberty’s Academic Decathlon team was competing at, what is called, the Texas academic Marathon Meet in Frisco.  Liberty had already scored third in the small school division at regional’s in Corpus Christi. That was in January. Liberty finished third statewide in the small school division. Liberty’s team also captured third in the Superquiz competition, which is a   “jeopardy-like” competition. Get this. Liberty High School was the top scoring Texas academic team in that small school category for the third consecutive year. Texas Academic Decathlon invites students to compete in three categories. Honors, Scholastic, and Varsity.  All nine LHS students earned medals. In Honors: Trinity Smith, was second place medalist in science; third place medal in essay, and third place in speech. Trinity, an LHS sophomore, earned a $600 scholarship.  LHS Sophomore Eve White, earned second place in literature, second in speech, and third in science for a $600 scholarship.. A Liberty senior, Gavin Deshotel, was third place in science, and had the highest Liberty overall score in Honors. That earned  Gavin a $600 scholarship. He also earned an Academic Decathlon scholarship last year. In the Scholastic category: Casey Hortman, another LHS senior, was first place overall medalist for a $600 scholarship. Michelle Ledoux, in the Liberty Junior class -took third overall for a $600 scholarship. Waidus Rose, a junior, was first place in interview, then took the second place medal in speech for another $600 scholarship for an LHS marathoner.  In the Varsity category how about Victor Marquez, He was second in literature, third in art, also third place in music, third in math, and third overall medalist. That gave Victor, a senior, $1,100 scholarship.  Victor also earned a Marathon scholarship last year. Kade Chakrabarti, took the third place medal in essay, third place medal in science, third place in economics, third place medal in social science, and first place overall to bring home $1,600 in scholarship winnings as a high school junior. Nick Maxey, took third in art, and third in speech, earning the LHS junior a $600 scholarship. Randy Gunter is the coach of Liberty Academic Decathlon team assisted by Zachary Taylor.  Brandon Smith, of Firm Foundations Healthcare in Liberty served as the LHS science expert. Brandon’s wife, Stephanie, assisted in math, and the couple was tem travel sponsors – All nine Liberty marathoners earned medal.
