The Liberty County Sheriffs Departments has identified the man found in a pond Sunday afternoon as 54-year-old Steven William Willingham Jr. from the Cleveland area. The results of the autopsy are still pending.
Liberty County Sheriffs Public Information Officer, Captain Ken DeFoor released a statement about a man’s body found in a pond on Sunday. In his statement, Captain DeFoor said a family planned fishing trip to an abandoned pond on CR 2291 in Mid-Liberty County by nearby residents was spoiled with the discovery of an unidentified male floating in the water from what appears to be a drowning. Sheriff’s Office got the call after 5:15 pm Sunday evening. Lead Investigator Ann Marie Mitchell was dispatched to the pond. The Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department also responded and it was they who recovered the body in the water. Investigator Mitchell reported there was clothing, as well as other personal items, lying on the bank of the pond but no vehicle. The victim found in the water was said to be wearing only his underwear. Justice of the Peace Wade Brown told KSHN News the body had probably been in the water for at least three days based on the advanced state of decomposition. Sheriff’s Investigator Ann Marie Mitchell also noted that there were no obvious signs of injury or foul play, JP Wade Brown for precinct #5 ordered an autopsy and said he expected to have more information by Tuesday afternoon.
