Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne reported that on Monday, May 4th, his department was involved in the recovery of the body of a kayaker in Galveston Bay. Just after 10 Monday, Harris County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a boater who reported an unattended kayak floating in that part of the bay that’s in Chambers County. Harris County Sheriff’s Marine deputies responded to assist the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office and found the unmanned kayak, but saw no one in the water. A US Coast Guard helicopter joined the search and it was they who located a body in the water southeast of Kemah near what is known as Redfish Island. That was about a mile from where the kayak was recovered. The US Coast Guard also recovered the body and brought it to the Kemah marina where it was released to the Chambers County Sheriffs deputies. Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division are conducting an investigation and have identified the victim as Christopher Simmons, age 39, from Wallis, TX. Justice of the Peace Larry Cryer is preformed an inquest and has ordered an autopsy.
