With the New Year will come changes to social security. Andy Hardwick with the Houston office of Social Security said coming up this next year, 2021, there will be increases to both the cost of Medicare Part B and the required deductible. Social Security’s Andy Hardwick also reminded folks to be on the lookout for scams. Be sure to remember, if there is a problem, Mr. Hardwick said social security will mail you a letter with your Social Security number. The latest scam is an increase of robocalls or live callers has increased. Fraudsters pretend to be government employees and claim there is identity theft or some other problem with a person’s Social Security number, account, or benefits.
Scammers may even threaten to have you arrested or take some other legal action. Some may offer to increase benefits, protect assets, or resolve identity theft. Andy Hardwick works for Social Security and he said, in an interview on KSHN, that Social Security employees will never threaten anyone for information or promise a benefit in exchange for personal information or money. These are crooks –ask for their contact information and call social security to report them. These thieves will probably hang up but just do not give them your information.
