Commissioners approve budget for upcoming fiscal year

In attendance for their regular meeting of the Liberty County Commissioners Court were County Judge Jay Knight and Commissioner Precinct 1 Bruce Karbowski, Commissioner Precinct 2 Greg Arthur, Commissioner Precinct 3 James “Boo” Reaves and Commissioner Precinct 4 Leon Wilson.  Because of the Covid 19 pandemic it has been several months since the Court has met with all commissioners and the County judge present.    County Judge Jay Knight noted the Liberty County Prayer March scheduled for this coming Saturday, June 26th.  Judge Knight also took note of the recent passing of former County Commissioner Harry Hilton. County Judge Knight called for a vote on the fiscal year 2021 budget. That was approved unanimously, as was the new lower property tax rate. That new tax rate, previously reported on, for the new fiscal year will be .5543 cents per $100 of appraised property value. As is obvious, this translated to a little over 55 cents per 100 dollars of property value. That lowered tax rate was approved by commissioners. The new fiscal year begins Thursday October 1st, and, a major issue is that the county will now take over operation of the county jail for the first time since 1993 – 27 years. All involved in that transaction are still working to ensure a smooth transition.
