County moving forward on Law Enforcement Center

At Tuesday mornings meeting of Liberty County Commissioners giant steps were taken toward building a new multi-million dollar Law Enforcement Center for Liberty County. First up, Commissioners approved a resolution to publish a notice to issue Certificates of Obligation. According to County Judge Jay Knight it is estimated to be in the neighborhood of $25 million dollars to build the two buildings proposed for the Law Enforcement Center.  Both of those resolutions passed unanimously 4-0. Then Commissioners approved entering into an earnest money contract to buy 39 acres of land on State Highway 146 North, just inside the Liberty city limits. That’s the proposed site for the new law enforcement center. That land is presently owned by prominent businessman, Jesse Lopez. The proposed purchase price of $14,000 per acre or between $55,000 and $600,000. It’s land on State Highway 146 in far north Liberty and right in the general area of the large ground water storage tank owned by the city of Liberty. Commissioners approved land purchase item on a 3-1 vote. Precinct 4 Commissioner Leon Wilson voted no to entering into that earnest money contract. No word on the reason for Commissioner Wilson’s no vote. Liberty County Commissioners took all these actions yesterday as part of a plan to build a new Law Enforcement Center. As proposed now, the two buildings will house the Sheriff’s Department in the main structure with another building on the same property for the Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace, and Precinct 3 Constable’s offices. That second building will also house office accommodations for the Texas Ranger, Game Wardens & DPS. Again, yesterday at their regular meeting, Liberty County Commissioners passed two resolutions needed to issue around $25 million in Certificates of Obligation. They also approved entering into an earnest money contract with Jesse Lopez to buy 39 acres of property at about $14,000 per acre, for a new Law Enforcement Center in the north part of the City of Liberty.
