Expired Registration Leads to Drug Arrest

A traffic stop on a vehicle with an out of date registration resulted in two people being arrested last week. The Liberty County Sheriff’s office reports The driver was identified as Johnny Tyrone Harris-Hines, age 34 . The passenger was identified as 42-year-old Kathy Ann Sterling. The deputy could smell an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and saw what is described as a pink and blue marijuana pipe in plain view. When law enforcement had the two exit the vehicle, Kathy Sterling told the deputy she had a firearm in her possession. She removed the Taurus .38 special from her bra area and placed it on the passenger seat. A search of the vehicle was made and methamphetamine was found on the passenger floorboard and under the drivers seat. There were several unused baggies and a digital scale with methamphetamine residue on it was found. Marijuana was also found in Sterling’s backpack.

The deputy then found a plastic baggy of a green/brown substance on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The driver said the baggy contained marijuana mixed with tobacco and that it belonged to him. A further search of the vehicle found a ledger book with multiple drug transactions recorded that included methamphetamine and THC cartridges.

Both subjects were arrested and transported to the Liberty County Jail without incident.

Johnny Tyrone Harris-Hines was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Kathy Ann Sterling, was charged with; (1) Manufacture/Deliver of a Controlled Substance – Second Degree Felony, (2) Possession of Marijuana – Class B Misdemeanor and, (3) Unlawful carrying a weapon – Class A Misdemeanor.
