Last Friday night the Liberty Panthers Boys Soccer team (12-7, 2-2) pulled themselves back into the conversation for a district 21-4A championship by defeating the 1st place Livingston Lions 2-1. Liberty forward Jaime Lopez slotted home a goal in the 10th minute for the early 1-0 lead. Livingston leveled the match before the half. The second half was a back and forth, with both teams playing well. Panther Goal keeper Rolando Becerra, turned away a slew of Lion tries for what appeared to be headed for a draw butas always its not over, until it over.
Very late Panther Abdiel Garcia put the locals soccer team ahead to stay on a ricochet goal. After the first round, 21-4A Liberty is solidly in 4th place in league play 12-7 overall, 2-2 in district with four games to play. That’s two wins back from district leader Huffman. Round 2 of district begins today as the Panther boys travel to Huffman for 5 pm JV and 7 pm varsity matches.As for the girls, the Lady Panthers are 8-6 overall, 2-2 in conference. They begin the second round of district soccer in Liberty at Memorial Stadium today with a 6 pm start. The 21-4A girl standings, after the first round, find the locals just behind the leader with 4 games to play.
