Panthers 23 Madisonville 10

For those who did not travel to Madisonville or did not get to see the KSHN live telecast or broadcast of the Liberty Panther football season opener, last Friday night be aware. The Panthers opened on the road with a solid 23-10 win over the tough Madisonville Mustangs.  It began as a low-scoring affair, but the Liberty Panthers came out blazing in the second half to defeat Madisonville by thirteen.  Early on all the Panther pluses was a stellar Liberty defense to hold Madisonville to just 3 points in the first half. However, with two ticks on the first half clock Liberty's Bryan Montes booted a 27-yard field goal to tie the game 3-3.  Early in the 3rd period the Panthers changed gears and dominated the second half with 191 offensive yards and the best defensive performance, we are told, in the past decade against a very good Madisonville team.  Overall, for the game, Liberty totaled 355 offensive yards on 45 plays from scrimmage.   The leading Panther rusher was Alijah Terrell who carried the ball 21 times for 188 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Coach Chad Taylor used two quarterbacks - Austin Walker and Kaden Nolan- That was a surprise, and when Austin Walker wasn’t at QB he was Kade Nolan’s favorite receiver.  Statistician on our KSHN Broadcast crew is Neal Thornton. He said this is the most passes Liberty has attempted, in one game - 9, in several seasons. Liberty is well known for the 3 yards and cloud of dust mindset of Head Coach Chad Taylor. The Panthers scored their first TD about 3 minutes into the third quarter when running Back Alijah Terrell rammed the ball in from 6 yards out.  The extra point was good and it was 10-3.  The greatest defensive stands by Liberty was when the Mustang had a first and goal inside Liberty’s five yard line but the panthers slammed the door on four straight plays. That pumped up the Liberty offense who then put together an 11 play, 98-yard drive highlighted by a 46-yard touchdown gallop by Alijah Terrell.  Liberty led 16-3 then as the fourth quarter began. The Panther’s next possession was a 36 yard drive in 8 plays with Alijah Terrell again doing the honors scoring from 2 yards out. Bryn Montes was good on the point after to spread the lead to 23-3.  Madisonville did manage one touchdown but that was not nearly enough, and the Panther’s ran out the clock for the 23-10 win. Liberty is 1-0 while Madisonville, who did play last week, dropped to 1-1. Next Friday, Liberty travels to face the Diboll Lumberjacks. Hope you can be there but if not, see it or hear it on your computer or cell phone with KSHN.com.
