The Liberty Panther Football team has rushed to an impressive 2-0 record for the 2020 season and Friday night the Panthers were on fire. This time they manhandled the Diboll Lumberjacks on the road in Diboll with a defensive masterpiece, 37-0. Offensively, Head Coach Chad Taylor utilized the one-two punch of senior running back Alijah Terrell and senior fullback Terrick Peterson to total nearly 400 offensive yards. Assistant Coach Jeff Stewart's new defensive look played another inspired game. The Lumberjacks' longest drive of the night was a 7-play, 46-yard into Panther territory that resulted in a missed field goal by Diboll, and that's as close as they came all night. Liberty put up 392 yards of total offense on 42 plays. Liberty still prefers the offensive ground gain but they might even try 6 or 7 passes in a game. The leading Panther ground gain effort was by Terrick Peterson. After missing week one with a sore ankle, on Friday, Terrick rushed for 168 yards on 9 carries and scored 2 touchdowns. Another senior, Alijah Terrell, had another good performance, with 14 carries for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns of his own. Freshman kicker Brian Montes booted a 36-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, bringing the score to 10-0 Liberty. It was Montes second field goal try of the season and he was good on both. Not bad for a freshman. Early in the third quarter Alijah Terrell raced 61 yards for a Panther score. Then on Liberty’s next possession came the longest run of the night. Fullback Terrick Peterson took the handoff at the Panther’s 10 yard line and blasted his way 90 yards for a Liberty touchdown. Liberty 24- Diboll -0. The final scoring was by Panther sophomore Manny Freeman getting his first high school TD on a 27-yard run. With the good point after kick the final score was on the board 37-0, Liberty. Next week, the Panthers are on the road, for the third straight week, to face the Shepherd Pirates and try to keep that perfect record.
