Tarkington Fire Chief named a Firefighter of the year

Chief Paul Gregory

Chief Paul Gregory of the Tarkington Fire Department has been named a Firefighter of the year by the 100 Club. Chief Gregory was nominated for this honor by Rex Evans, who is the Chief of Police for the Splendora Police Department.   Those nominated for this honor are nominated by their peers, for actions that are beyond the call of duty. Gregory’s nomination was due to his heroic actions on May 29th, 2019, when he responded to the shooting of Liberty County Sheriffs Deputy Richard Whitten. Gregory was cited for his actions by providing security, without regard for his own safety, while lifesaving measures were taken on Deputy Whitten. John Cortinas, of the 100 Club said “last year there were 45 Firefighters who received the award of Firefighter of the year” The award includes a citation plus a granite based trophy with a fire ax on top, as well as a ceremonial firefighter’s helmet. The awarding of the title of Firefighter of the year starts with a nomination, by the peers of the prospective honoree.  The committee of firefighters and police officers reviews the nominations and statements by those who witnessed and nominated the honoree.  The vote to award a person is on a simple yes or no vote. Those 45 firefighters honored as Firefighter of the year comes from the 18 county coverage area served by the 100 club. congratulates Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department Chief Paul Gregory on being named the 100 club’s Firefighter of the year
