Election Runoff: Here are answers to a growing number of questions after Tuesday’s primary election. There will be multiple runoff elections. All runoffs are on the Republican ballot, Starting with the new Liberty County Court-at-Law #2, Zack Zbranek and Wesley Hinch will be in that runoff. In the race for Pct 1 County Commissioner Bruce Karbowski will face Toby Wilburn. A runoff is also necessary in the race for Precinct 1 Constable, most often referred to as Constable for the Libertyarea. That runoff will feature Tammy Bishop and Jacob Cantu. Election Administrator Klint Bush told KSHN.com there is a significant number of provisional ballots. At this point no one knows if a recount might be required. At the end of the primary count Tuesday Jacob Cantu was in second place but only 2 votes ahead of the 3rd place finisher Bill Griffin. Those provisional ballots, we mentioned, have could have some impact on the point spread in that constable’s race. No word from Mr. Bush on when those provisional ballots might be resolved. Finally, a runoff is needed to determine the Precinct 6 Constable race for the Clevelandarea. Challenger Zack Harkness defeated Incumbent John Joselin but Cedric McDuffie had originally filed for a spot on the ballot for Constable Precinct # 6. Then he decided he was no longer interested in the post. His well intentioned effort to withdraw was not successful since the deadline to get off the ballot had passed. With McDuffie still on the printed ballot his 111 votes kept Harkness from having more than 50% of the total vote in that race. A runoff election is needed when a candidate in a race with more than two candidates fails to receive at least 50% plus one vote. Here is more. Early voting in the Republican Party runoff election is May 18th to May 22nd. Then Election Day is Tuesday May 26th.
